Preventive & Longevity Screening · Dubai

The right screen for your decade.

Decade-by-decade preventive and longevity pathways for Dubai patients — set, adjusted for your risks, and interpreted by a British-trained GP who keeps the trend line.

By decade

What actually changes every ten years.

Screening packages in Dubai are usually sold by size. Clinically, what matters is which questions are worth asking at your age and with your family history — and how often. This is the pathway our GPs work from.

20s

Baseline, deficiency and fertility groundwork
Core screen
Full blood count, kidney and liver function, HbA1c, lipids, thyroid, vitamin D, B12, ferritin, blood pressure and BMI/waist.
Why it differs in Dubai
Vitamin D deficiency is close to universal in indoor Dubai life, and iron deficiency without anaemia is common in young women who train in the heat. Sexual health screening is worth doing once and then after any change of partner.
Consider adding
Sexual health screen; AMH or semen analysis only where family planning questions exist.
Interval
Baseline once, then every 2–3 years if normal

30s

Metabolic drift and the first real risk picture
Core screen
Everything above plus fasting insulin or HOMA-IR where central weight is rising, HbA1c, full lipid profile with non-HDL, liver markers, TSH and blood pressure.
Why it differs in Dubai
This is the decade where long desk hours, late business dinners and low daylight quietly move HbA1c, triglycerides and liver enzymes. Fatty liver on a Dubai screen is usually metabolic, not alcohol.
Consider adding
Cardiovascular family-history review; thyroid antibodies where symptomatic; cervical screening for women per guideline.
Interval
Every 1–2 years, annually with a positive family history

40s

Cardiovascular risk becomes the main event
Core screen
Lipids with ApoB, blood pressure over multiple readings, HbA1c, kidney function with urine ACR, liver, thyroid, PSA discussion for men, and a 10-year cardiovascular risk calculation.
Why it differs in Dubai
South Asian and Middle Eastern patients carry cardiovascular risk at lower BMI and earlier age than UK-derived charts assume. A GP adjusting for ethnicity and family history changes who needs a statin conversation at 42 rather than 52.
Consider adding
ECG where symptoms or risk warrant; mammography discussion for women; sleep apnoea screening in snorers.
Interval
Annual

50s

Cancer screening and organ reserve
Core screen
Annual bloods as above plus bowel cancer screening (FIT or colonoscopy referral), PSA discussion, bone health assessment, eGFR trend and a medication review.
Why it differs in Dubai
Screening momentum is where Dubai's transient population loses out — records scatter across clinics on visa changes. A single GP holding your trend line is worth more than a bigger one-off panel.
Consider adding
DEXA referral for fracture risk; mammography per programme; spirometry in ex-smokers.
Interval
Annual, with defined screening intervals per programme

60s and beyond

Function, medication and independence
Core screen
Annual bloods, blood pressure, kidney function trend, HbA1c, B12 and vitamin D, cognitive and frailty screening, falls risk and a structured polypharmacy review.
Why it differs in Dubai
Many patients in this band are retired here or visiting family for long stretches. Home visits keep screening going without a clinic trip, and one doctor keeps the medication list coherent.
Consider adding
Vaccination review (influenza, pneumococcal, shingles); hearing and vision referral.
Interval
Annual, plus a medication review every 6–12 months
Risk lanes

When your age is not the deciding factor.

Family history of early heart disease

A parent or sibling with a cardiac event before 55 (men) or 65 (women) pulls lipid, ApoB and Lp(a) testing a decade earlier and makes blood pressure control non-negotiable.

Family history of diabetes

Screen HbA1c annually from your 20s, watch waist rather than weight, and test fasting insulin when HbA1c sits in the high-normal band.

Long-haul, shift or on-call work

Disrupted sleep moves glucose, blood pressure and cortisol. Screening pairs with sleep and shift-pattern review, not just a bigger panel.

Planning a pregnancy

Pre-conception screening covers rubella and varicella immunity, thyroid, ferritin, vitamin D, folate and glucose — three months before trying, not after.

Newly arrived in Dubai

One baseline panel plus vitamin D, and a copy of any home-country records loaded into one place so future results have a trend to sit against.

Already on medication

Statins, metformin, thyroid replacement and antihypertensives each carry their own monitoring schedule. Screening should fold those bloods in rather than duplicating them.

FAQs

Intervals, packages and what prevention buys you.

What health checks do I need at my age in Dubai?+

In your 20s and 30s: a metabolic and deficiency baseline — blood count, kidney and liver function, HbA1c, lipids, thyroid, vitamin D, B12 and ferritin with blood pressure. From 40 add formal cardiovascular risk scoring with ApoB and a cancer screening discussion. From 50 add bowel cancer screening and bone health. A GP sets the interval from your family history and results.

How often should I have a health screen?+

Every two to three years in your 20s if everything is normal, every one to two years in your 30s, and annually from 40. A positive family history, an abnormal previous result or ongoing medication moves you to annual or six-monthly regardless of age.

Is a bigger package always better?+

No. Beyond a point, extra markers mostly generate borderline results that need chasing without changing treatment. The value is in the right markers for your decade and risk profile, read against your previous results — which is why a GP orders the panel rather than a menu.

What is the difference between preventive screening and longevity medicine?+

Preventive screening looks for disease and risk early enough to act — cardiovascular risk, diabetes, cancer screening, deficiencies. Longevity medicine takes an already-healthy person and optimises trajectory: advanced lipids, body composition, fitness markers and biological age tracking over years. Most patients want screening first and optimisation second.

Does living in Dubai change what I should screen for?+

It changes emphasis. Vitamin D deficiency is far more common than in northern Europe because daylight exposure is low indoors. Heat and training patterns affect hydration-sensitive markers and iron. South Asian and Middle Eastern patients develop cardiometabolic risk at lower BMI, so waist measurement and HbA1c matter earlier than standard charts imply.

Do I need a GP consultation before screening?+

It is how the screen becomes useful. A short consultation defines the question, sets the panel, records family history and medication, and means someone owns the result. Screening without that produces numbers nobody acts on.

Can screening be done at home?+

Yes for the blood, urine and blood pressure elements — a DHA-licensed nurse visits homes, offices and hotels across Dubai, with a AED 250 visit fee plus the tests. ECG, spirometry and examination-based parts are done at our Business Bay clinic.

What happens after the results?+

A British-trained GP calls you, explains each marker against your symptoms, history and previous results, and agrees the plan: treatment, a lifestyle target with a re-test date, a specialist referral, or reassurance with a next screening interval.

Are cancer screening tests included?+

Blood-based elements and the screening conversation are. Mammography, colonoscopy, DEXA and imaging are coordinated with vetted Dubai partners, and your GP reviews the report with you afterwards. Aafiyah is a primary care clinic and does not run imaging on site.

Can I claim screening on insurance?+

Aafiyah is not insurance-based, so there is no direct billing. We issue a fully coded invoice with supporting documentation so you can submit a reimbursement claim to your insurer.

Screening is for people without urgent symptoms. With chest pain, severe breathlessness, heavy bleeding or sudden weakness, call 998 or attend the nearest emergency department.
