Am I eligible for Mounjaro or Wegovy in Dubai?
Eligibility isn't a tick-box exercise. A proper assessment covers BMI, medical history, contraindications, current medications and baseline bloods. Here's what a British GP actually reviews before agreeing that GLP-1 treatment is appropriate.
The licensing threshold
GLP-1 medications for weight management are licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27+ with weight-related health conditions (hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, prediabetes, PCOS with insulin resistance).
In practice, your GP will assess BMI alongside body composition, waist circumference, metabolic markers and weight-loss history. BMI is a threshold, not the whole clinical picture.
What we actually check
BMI, waist circumference and weight history. Full medical history — pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, significant GI conditions, thyroid history. Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2 (both contraindications). Current medications and potential interactions. Pregnancy plans (GLP-1s are not for pregnancy, breastfeeding or those planning pregnancy in the near term).
Baseline bloods: kidney function, liver function, HbA1c, lipids, B12, ferritin and thyroid screening where indicated. Nothing is prescribed until these are back and reviewed with you.
Good signs you're a fit
You've tried sustainable lifestyle changes and hit a wall. You have weight-related health concerns your GP has flagged. You want a structured medical approach, not a 4-week quick fix. You're prepared to engage with monthly reviews and 3-monthly bloods.
Reasons to slow down
History of pancreatitis or significant gallbladder disease. Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2. Significant GI conditions (gastroparesis, severe IBD). Recent bariatric surgery (specialist input needed). Pregnancy, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy soon. Other appetite-modifying medications.
None of these are automatic disqualifications — they're conversations to have with a doctor who has time for them, not a form that spits out yes/no.
Questions patients ask.
Do I need a BMI above 30 to qualify?+
Licensing supports BMI 30+, or 27+ with weight-related conditions. Your GP will assess your full clinical picture — BMI alone isn't the only factor.
Can I start GLP-1 if I have PCOS?+
Often yes. GLP-1 medications improve insulin sensitivity and are frequently effective for women with PCOS. Your GP will assess whether GLP-1 therapy is the right tool for your specific metabolic picture.
What if I have a family history of thyroid cancer?+
Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2 is a contraindication. Other thyroid history is usually not — your GP will screen properly.
Is the eligibility call really free?+
Yes. Fifteen minutes with a British-trained GP, no charge, no obligation. If GLP-1 isn't right for you, we'll say so and suggest what is.
