Herpes testing in Dubai.
Type-specific HSV-1 and HSV-2 blood test, PCR swab of active lesions, and a senior GP explaining the result the same day.
What we test, and when
- · PCR swab (active lesion) — gold standard when a blister or ulcer is present; types HSV-1 vs HSV-2
- · Type-specific HSV IgG — best for asymptomatic screening; reliable from 12–16 weeks post-exposure
- · Full STI panel add-on — HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B/C, chlamydia, gonorrhoea — single visit
- · Home blood test — DHA-licensed nurse visits anywhere in Dubai
Privacy
Every DHA-licensed clinic in Dubai must verify Emirates ID at registration and upload results to NABIDH — nothing is sent to your employer, and insurance is only billed if you ask us to. Any clinic advertising 'anonymous' STI testing in Dubai is misrepresenting the law.
If the result is positive
Same-day GP call. Daily suppressive aciclovir or valaciclovir reduces outbreaks by around 70–80% and transmission risk by around 50%. We give practical guidance on partner disclosure, safer sex, and pregnancy considerations. HSV is manageable — not life-changing.
FAQs
Which herpes test should I have?+
If you have an active blister, ulcer or sore — PCR swab. It's the gold standard when a lesion is present and can distinguish HSV-1 from HSV-2. If you don't have symptoms but want to know your status — type-specific IgG blood test. Standard IgG tests are unreliable; we only use type-specific (HerpeSelect or equivalent).
How much does a herpes test cost in Dubai?+
HSV-1 and HSV-2 type-specific IgG blood test AED 380. PCR swab of an active lesion AED 450. Full STI panel with HSV, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B/C, chlamydia and gonorrhoea AED 950. Home nurse visit adds AED 250.
How soon after exposure can I test?+
PCR swab: as soon as a lesion appears (usually 2–12 days post-exposure). IgG blood test: not reliable before 12 weeks post-exposure; definitive at 16 weeks. Testing IgG earlier can give false negatives that need repeating.
Is a herpes test confidential in Dubai?+
Results go to you only. Nothing is sent to your employer. Lab results upload to the NABIDH exchange under DHA rules and are visible only to clinicians you authorise. Every DHA-licensed clinic in Dubai must verify Emirates ID or passport at registration — that's the law, not a choice.
What happens if the test is positive?+
A senior GP calls you the same day. HSV is a manageable condition — most people have long asymptomatic periods, and daily suppressive antiviral therapy (aciclovir or valaciclovir) reduces outbreaks and transmission risk. We prescribe, follow up, and provide clear guidance for partner disclosure and safer sex.
Can I have herpes without symptoms?+
Yes — very commonly. Roughly 60–90% of people with HSV-1 and 50–80% of people with HSV-2 have no or minimal symptoms. That's why type-specific IgG screening exists — and why we recommend it as part of a full STI check, not only when a lesion appears.
Can I get tested at home?+
Yes. A DHA-licensed nurse comes to your home, apartment or hotel anywhere in Dubai for the blood test. Active-lesion PCR swabs are done in-clinic because the sample technique matters.
