General symptoms

Non-specific symptoms — tiredness, fever, unexplained weight change, feeling generally unwell — often have several possible causes. A structured GP assessment usually narrows things down quickly.

General symptoms rarely point to a single cause. A careful history, examination and a small number of appropriate blood tests are usually enough to identify whether the cause is lifestyle, infection, hormonal, nutritional, metabolic or something that needs further investigation.

Common symptom patterns

  • · Tiredness that persists despite adequate sleep
  • · Recurrent low-grade fevers or night sweats
  • · Unexplained changes in weight or appetite
  • · Feeling generally unwell without a clear cause
  • · Poor concentration or 'brain fog'

When to book a GP

  • · Symptoms have lasted more than 2–4 weeks
  • · Symptoms are affecting sleep, work or daily function
  • · You have a personal or family history of relevant medical conditions

When urgent help may be needed

  • · High fever with confusion, stiff neck or a non-blanching rash
  • · Rapid unintentional weight loss with night sweats

FAQs

How long should I wait before seeing a GP about non-specific symptoms?+

As a rough guide, symptoms lasting more than 2–4 weeks, or symptoms that are progressive, should be assessed. Anything with red-flag features (unexplained weight loss, night sweats, blood loss, severe pain) should be seen sooner.

Can a blood test find the cause of feeling unwell?+

A well-chosen blood panel can identify anaemia, thyroid disorders, diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, kidney or liver problems, and signs of inflammation or infection. It is a very useful starting point but not a substitute for clinical assessment.
