Brain fog

Brain fog describes reduced concentration, slower thinking and mental fatigue. Common causes include poor sleep, stress, dehydration, iron deficiency, thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiencies, perimenopause, post-viral (including long COVID) syndromes, and low mood. A GP assessment and short blood panel usually identify reversible contributors.

Frequently asked questions

What tests are done for brain fog?+

Typical panel: full blood count, ferritin, TSH, vitamin D, B12, HbA1c and — where appropriate — coeliac screen and hormonal profile.

Can menopause cause brain fog?+

Yes — cognitive changes and word-finding difficulties are common in perimenopause. HRT, sleep and lifestyle strategies can help.

How long does long-COVID brain fog last?+

It varies. Most people improve within 3–6 months with pacing, sleep, hydration and structured graded activity. Persistent symptoms deserve specialist review.
