Tired all the time
Persistent tiredness — sometimes called ‘tired all the time’ or TATT — can have many possible causes, including poor sleep, stress, iron deficiency, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, diabetes, chronic infections and mental-health conditions. A GP can review your history, examine you and arrange a small number of appropriate blood tests to narrow things down. Seek urgent care if tiredness is accompanied by chest pain, severe breathlessness, unexplained weight loss, blood loss, confusion or fainting.

What this symptom means
‘Tired all the time’ describes fatigue that does not improve with rest and lasts more than two to four weeks. It is different from normal tiredness after a poor night’s sleep or a hard week. Persistent fatigue is a common reason for GP visits and, in most people, an identifiable and treatable cause can be found.
Common possible causes
- · Insufficient or poor-quality sleep
- · Stress, anxiety or low mood
- · Iron deficiency (with or without anaemia)
- · Vitamin D deficiency
- · Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
- · Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
- · Post-viral fatigue after flu, COVID-19 or another infection
- · Prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
- · Alcohol or excess caffeine
- · Certain medications (including some blood-pressure and allergy medicines)
Less common possible causes
- · Coeliac disease
- · Obstructive sleep apnoea
- · Chronic kidney or liver disease
- · Hormonal disorders (e.g. adrenal insufficiency)
- · Chronic infections (e.g. hepatitis, tuberculosis)
- · Perimenopause and menopause
- · Chronic fatigue syndrome / ME
Serious causes that must not be missed
- · Cancer — usually with other features such as unexplained weight loss, night sweats or bleeding
- · Heart failure — usually with breathlessness and swollen ankles
- · Severe anaemia
- · Tiredness with severe breathlessness or chest pain
- · Tiredness with unexplained weight loss of more than 5% in a few months
- · Tiredness with night sweats or persistent low-grade fevers
- · Tiredness with new confusion, fainting or seizures
- · Tiredness with new blood loss (in stool, urine, or heavy periods)
Call 998 (UAE ambulance) or attend the nearest emergency department for any of the above.
When a same-day GP is appropriate

- · Persistent tiredness for more than 2–4 weeks
- · Tiredness affecting work, exercise or family life

- · Are your periods heavy, or have you noticed any bleeding?
- · Have you had any recent viral illness?
- · What is your diet like, and are you vegan or vegetarian?
- · Any weight change, hair change, temperature intolerance or bowel change?
- · What alcohol and caffeine do you drink?
- · Which medications and supplements do you take?
History factors that may matter
- · Heavy menstrual bleeding
- · Vegan or restrictive diet

Medicines that may contribute

- · Sedating antihistamines
- · Some antidepressants
- · Opioid painkillers
Never stop a prescribed medication without discussing it with a clinician.

Frequently asked questions
Why am I tired all the time even after sleeping enough?+
This is a common pattern. Even with 7–8 hours in bed, fatigue can persist if sleep quality is poor (e.g. sleep apnoea, alcohol before bed), or if there is an underlying issue such as iron deficiency, thyroid disease, vitamin deficiency, prediabetes, depression or post-viral fatigue. A GP consultation and a short blood panel are the right starting point.
Which blood tests should I ask for if I feel exhausted?+
A reasonable starting panel is: full blood count, ferritin, thyroid function (TSH, free T4), HbA1c, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and folate, kidney and liver function. If there are bowel symptoms or a family history, add a coeliac screen.
Can dehydration in Dubai cause tiredness?+
Yes — chronic low-grade dehydration is common in Dubai’s heat and can contribute to fatigue, headaches and poor concentration. However, do not assume tiredness is ‘just dehydration’ without ruling out other causes.
Can Aafiyah do the blood tests at home?+
Yes — a DHA-licensed nurse can take your blood at home, hotel, villa or office anywhere in Dubai. Results are then reviewed by a British-trained GP who calls you to explain them.
How long should I wait before seeing a doctor about tiredness?+
Fatigue lasting more than 2–4 weeks — or fatigue interfering with daily life — is a reasonable reason to book an assessment. Sooner if there are red-flag features such as weight loss, night sweats, bleeding or breathlessness.
