HbA1c Blood Test — Dubai

HbA1c reflects your average blood glucose over the previous 2–3 months by measuring how much glucose is attached to haemoglobin in your red blood cells. Reviewed by a British-trained GP, with home and clinic testing across Dubai.

What is it?

HbA1c reflects your average blood glucose over the previous 2–3 months by measuring how much glucose is attached to haemoglobin in your red blood cells.

Why it matters for long-term health

It is the single most important blood test for diagnosing and monitoring type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and overall metabolic health. Unlike a one-off glucose, it cannot be skewed by what you ate yesterday.

Longevity and healthy ageing

Rising HbA1c is one of the strongest predictors of cardiovascular disease, dementia, kidney disease and shortened lifespan. Keeping HbA1c in the optimal range is foundational longevity medicine.

What a high result may indicate

An HbA1c of 42–47 mmol/mol (6.0–6.4%) indicates prediabetes. ≥48 mmol/mol (6.5%) confirms diabetes. Even high-normal values (38–41) are linked to higher cardiovascular risk.

What a low result may indicate

Unusually low HbA1c may reflect anaemia, recent blood loss, haemoglobinopathy, or rarely a glucose-lowering medication mismatch.

Common symptoms of abnormal levels

  • Frequent urination

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetic kidney disease

How a British GP interprets your result

Your British GP interprets HbA1c alongside fasting glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, lipids, ALT/GGT, blood pressure and waist circumference — not in isolation. We classify your metabolic phenotype and build a personalised plan rather than only chasing a number.

Further investigations we may arrange

  • Fasting insulin & HOMA-IR
  • Oral glucose tolerance test where indicated
  • Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) trial
  • Liver function & ultrasound for fatty liver
  • Urine ACR for early kidney involvement
  • ECG and ApoB for cardiovascular risk

Lifestyle measures that may improve your result

  • Mediterranean or lower-carbohydrate dietary pattern
  • 150+ minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly
  • Two resistance training sessions weekly
  • Sleep 7–8 hours, treat sleep apnoea
  • 10,000 daily steps where feasible
  • Stress reduction and alcohol moderation

Evidence-based treatment options

  • Structured lifestyle programme (first-line)
  • Metformin where appropriate
  • SGLT2 inhibitors / GLP-1 receptor agonists for cardiometabolic protection
  • Referral to diabetologist for complex cases

When to retest

Every 3 months if abnormal or actively treated. Annually for routine longevity screening once optimised.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a HbA1c blood test at home in Dubai?+

Yes — our DHA-licensed nurse draws HbA1c at your home, hotel, villa or office anywhere in Dubai, usually within 60–90 minutes of booking. Your result is then reviewed by a British-trained GP who calls you to explain it in plain English.

Do I need to fast before a HbA1c test?+

Most patients do not need to fast for HbA1c specifically. If we are running a fuller panel (lipids, glucose, insulin) we will advise an overnight fast — our team confirms this when you book.

How quickly will I get my HbA1c result?+

Standard turnaround is 24–48 hours from a DHA-accredited laboratory. Your named British GP then calls you personally with the interpretation and a written wellness plan — not a PDF you have to decode alone.

Is HbA1c covered by insurance?+

Most premium UAE and international insurers reimburse — we provide a fully coded invoice at the visit. Reimbursement typically arrives within 5–10 working days.
