Prediabetes — early detection and prevention in Dubai
Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range. It is diagnosed with an HbA1c of 42–47 mmol/mol (6.0–6.4%) or a fasting glucose of 6.1–6.9 mmol/L. Structured lifestyle change reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by more than half.
- · Diagnosed with blood tests, not symptoms
- · Usually silent — screening is important in at-risk adults
- · Reversible in many cases with lifestyle change
- · Increases cardiovascular risk even before diabetes develops
- · Annual re-testing is usually recommended
What prediabetes is
Prediabetes is a state of impaired glucose regulation where blood sugar levels are above normal but below the diabetes threshold. It signals higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Treatment
Overview
- · Structured lifestyle change
- · Address sleep and stress
- · Weight management where indicated
- · Consider metformin in selected higher-risk adults, after clinical discussion
Medicines
- · Metformin may be considered in higher-risk adults, particularly with a BMI ≥ 35 or a history of gestational diabetes
- · Any medicine decision should follow a proper clinical discussion
Do not stop or change any prescribed medicine without first discussing it with your clinician.
Lifestyle support
- · Aim for 5–10% weight loss where indicated
- · 150 minutes moderate activity per week plus resistance training
- · Reduce refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed food
- · Sleep 7–9 hours where possible
Monitoring and follow-up
- · HbA1c at least yearly
- · Blood pressure, lipids and weight at annual review
Prevention and risk reduction
- · The same lifestyle strategies also prevent cardiovascular disease and fatty liver
When to seek urgent help

Frequently asked questions
Is prediabetes reversible?+
In many people, yes. Structured lifestyle change can return HbA1c to normal and delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.
Do I need medication for prediabetes?+
Most people are managed with lifestyle change alone. Metformin is considered in higher-risk cases after a proper clinical discussion.
