Digestive system

Bloating, reflux, abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits are extremely common. Most causes are benign and reversible — but some warning signs need prompt assessment.

A GP will take a careful history of pain location, triggers, bowel pattern, weight change and bleeding. Simple bloods, stool tests and abdominal examination usually clarify the direction of assessment; imaging or referral is arranged where needed.

Common symptom patterns

  • · Reflux and heartburn after meals
  • · Bloating and irregular bowel habits (IBS-type patterns)
  • · Right upper abdominal discomfort after fatty meals
  • · Central cramping pain relieved by opening bowels

  • · Symptoms lasting more than 2–4 weeks
  • · New symptoms after age 45

  • · Severe sudden abdominal pain

FAQs

Is bloating usually a serious sign?+

In most people, bloating relates to diet, gut motility, food intolerances, IBS or overgrowth of gut bacteria. Persistent bloating for more than 3 weeks — especially in women over 50, or with weight loss, appetite change or bleeding — should always be assessed to exclude other causes.

When should reflux be investigated?+

New reflux after age 50, reflux that does not respond to standard treatment, difficulty swallowing, weight loss or anaemia should all prompt further assessment, usually including a gastroscopy referral.
