Fever, cough, tummy pain, rashes and vomiting are common childhood presentations. Our family medicine consultants assess children and adults.
Children can deteriorate more quickly than adults. Any unwell child under 3 months, or older child with drowsiness, breathlessness, poor fluid intake or a non-blanching rash, should be seen urgently.

When to book a GP
- · Fever lasting more than 3 days
- · Cough lasting more than 1–2 weeks
- · Recurrent tummy pain
When urgent help may be needed
- · Any unwell baby under 3 months
- · Non-blanching rash
- · Drowsiness or difficulty rousing
- · Fast or laboured breathing
- · Poor urine output or dry mouth

FAQs
When should I take my feverish child to hospital?+
Any baby under 3 months with a fever should be seen urgently. Older children need urgent care if they are drowsy, hard to rouse, breathing quickly, have a rash that does not blanch, are dehydrated, or if you are worried they are getting worse.
