Wegovy vs Ozempic in Dubai: same molecule, different prescription

Patients regularly arrive convinced these are two different drugs, or that they are identical. Neither is true. Same active molecule, different licensed indication, different maximum dose, different pen.

That distinction determines what your doctor can justify prescribing, how far the dose can go, and what the realistic result looks like at twelve months.

How our GPs actually decide

Wegovy is usually the right prescription when

  • Weight management is the clinical indication in your notes
  • You need the full 2.4 mg ceiling to reach target
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction is part of the goal
  • You are converting from a diabetes dose onto the obesity licence

Ozempic is usually the right prescription when

  • You have type-2 diabetes and HbA1c is part of the target
  • You are stable and tolerating your current pen well
  • Wegovy is unavailable in the UAE and continuity beats switching
  • A 2 mg ceiling is clinically sufficient for your plan

Converting between the two pens

Because the molecule is identical, moving between Ozempic and Wegovy is the simplest transition in this category — but the pens deliver different increments, so we convert to the nearest step rather than assuming an exact match, and we recheck tolerance at the new dose before going higher.

If you are moving up from 2 mg Ozempic to 2.4 mg Wegovy we normally hold four weeks at the new pen before considering it stable. If you are moving down, we watch appetite and glucose in patients with diabetes.

Supply, storage and reimbursement in Dubai

Both pens are prescription-only in the UAE and both have seen supply pressure. We keep the plan molecule-led so that a pen change does not become a treatment interruption.

Store unopened pens at 2–8°C. In Dubai summer, that means never leaving a pen in a car or a beach bag — heat-damaged semaglutide loses potency invisibly, and patients then read the flat scale as treatment failure.

This is a self-pay programme. We issue a fully coded invoice you can submit to your insurer yourself; we do not bill insurance directly.

Whichever medicine your doctor chooses, the programme is the same

One doctor-led programme in three tiers — Foundation AED 2,999/month, Accelerate AED 3,499/month, Complete Metabolic AED 3,999/month. The tier reflects the medicine and level of support your doctor recommends, not the brand name on the pen.

  • Prescription from a named British GP (DHA-licensed) where clinically appropriate
  • Monthly GP review with dose titration
  • Baseline bloods, then repeat bloods every 3 months
  • Direct WhatsApp access to your care team
  • Cold-chain pharmacy delivery anywhere in Dubai, or in-clinic collection
  • No joining fee, no long-term contract

Medication is arranged through a DHA-licensed pharmacy partner and your final cost is confirmed by your doctor at consultation. UAE health insurance does not typically fund GLP-1 medication for weight management — we issue a fully coded invoice you can submit yourself.

FAQ

Wegovy vs Ozempic: questions Dubai patients ask

Are Wegovy and Ozempic the same thing?+

They contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but they are different products. Wegovy is licensed for weight management and titrates to 2.4 mg; Ozempic is licensed for type-2 diabetes and stops at 2 mg. The licence and ceiling dose are what change your clinical plan.

Can I switch from Ozempic to Wegovy in Dubai?+

Usually yes, when weight management is the documented indication and your GP agrees the higher ceiling is appropriate. We convert to the nearest matching dose step rather than assuming equivalence, then hold four weeks before considering another increase.

Will Wegovy give me more weight loss than Ozempic?+

On average yes, largely because the licensed dose goes higher. Trial averages sit near 15% for Wegovy against roughly 10–12% for Ozempic at diabetes doses. Individual results vary with adherence, protein intake, sleep, resistance training and underlying metabolic conditions.

Which one is cheaper at your Dubai clinic?+

Both sit in the same Foundation tier at AED 2,999 per month, so the programme price is the same whichever semaglutide product your doctor prescribes — it covers the consultation, monthly reviews, baseline and 3-monthly bloods and WhatsApp access. Accelerate (tirzepatide) is AED 3,499 and Complete Metabolic AED 3,999. Medication is supplied through a DHA-licensed pharmacy partner and confirmed at consultation.

What if I have diabetes and want weight loss too?+

That is a common and entirely reasonable goal. We will usually keep you on the diabetes licence while glycaemic control is unstable, then review whether the weight-management dose is justified once HbA1c and bloods are where we want them.
