One molecule, three products
Ozempic is semaglutide dosed 0.25–2.0 mg weekly and licensed for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is the same molecule dosed 0.25–2.4 mg weekly and licensed specifically for weight management. Rybelsus is oral semaglutide (7 or 14 mg daily) for type 2 diabetes.
For weight loss specifically, Wegovy is the product built for the job. Ozempic is used off-label in some cases; Rybelsus for weight management is not yet standard in Dubai.
How semaglutide works
Semaglutide mimics GLP-1, a natural gut hormone that signals satiety and slows gastric emptying. The result is reduced appetite, smaller meals, less snacking and — over months — meaningful, sustained weight loss for most patients.
In the STEP-1 trial, adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg lost an average of 15% of body weight at 68 weeks alongside lifestyle support. In diabetes trials, Ozempic produces clinically meaningful HbA1c reductions alongside a smaller weight benefit.
