Ozempic (semaglutide, Novo Nordisk) is licensed in the UAE for type 2 diabetes. Its weight-loss reputation is real — but for weight management specifically, Wegovy (same molecule, higher dose curve) is what the drug's manufacturer developed for the job. Here's how a British GP thinks about which one fits.

What Ozempic is licensed for
Ozempic is licensed in the UAE and internationally for type 2 diabetes at doses of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg weekly. It improves glycaemic control, has cardiovascular benefits in eligible patients and often produces meaningful weight loss as a side effect.
That is not the same as being licensed for weight management. When Novo Nordisk designed a weight-loss-specific product from the same molecule, they built Wegovy — with a titration ladder up to 2.4 mg. If weight loss is the primary goal, Wegovy is the tool that was built for the job.
When Ozempic still makes sense
If you have type 2 diabetes and weight loss is a secondary goal, Ozempic is often the right prescription — you get the glycaemic benefits it was designed for and the weight benefits arrive alongside. For prediabetes or insulin resistance without a diabetes diagnosis, your GP will discuss whether Ozempic, Wegovy or lifestyle-first is the right path.

Can I use Ozempic for weight loss in Dubai?+
Ozempic is licensed for diabetes, not weight management. It is sometimes used off-label; for weight loss specifically, Wegovy (same molecule at a higher dose) is usually more appropriate. Your GP will advise.
Ozempic vs Wegovy — what's the difference?+
Same active ingredient (semaglutide), different maximum dose and different licence. Ozempic tops out at 2.0 mg for diabetes; Wegovy goes up to 2.4 mg specifically for weight management.
