What prediabetes actually means
HbA1c 5.7–6.4% means your average blood sugar is above the healthy range but below the diabetes threshold. Left untreated, around 5–10% of people with prediabetes progress to type 2 diabetes each year. Treated properly, most reverse.
Reversal isn't about a stricter diet forever — it's about restoring insulin sensitivity for long enough that the underlying disease resolves. The window matters.
The Aafiyah reversal pathway
Free 15-minute GP call to review your result and history. Baseline bloods confirm HbA1c and add fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, lipids, ALT/GGT (fatty liver), uric acid, vitamin D and thyroid. Blood pressure and waist circumference are recorded.
Your GP builds a plan: nutrition tuned for insulin sensitivity, resistance training, sleep support, metformin if indicated, and GLP-1 medication in selected cases where BMI or associated risk make it appropriate. Monthly reviews, HbA1c repeated at 3 months.
What good progress looks like
HbA1c usually starts moving by 3 months. A drop from 6.1% to 5.5% is a full reversal. We aim for that alongside a 5–10% body-weight loss, waist circumference reduction and improved lipids. The programme continues in maintenance mode after reversal — because insulin resistance can return if the lifestyle foundation slips.

Do I need medication?+
Not always. Many people reverse prediabetes with lifestyle alone. Metformin is added where indicated (higher HbA1c, BMI, other risk factors). GLP-1 is selected use.
How long does reversal take?+
Usually 3–12 months, depending on starting point and adherence. HbA1c moves at the pace of red blood cell turnover — expect meaningful change by 3 months.
Can I stop treatment once reversed?+
Medication can often be tapered, but the lifestyle foundation continues. Prediabetes can return. We continue monitoring — usually 6-monthly.
