Mounjaro vs Wegovy vs Ozempic in Dubai — an honest side-by-side.
Three names, two molecules, one big question. Here's how a British-trained GP thinks about the differences — mechanism, average weight loss, tolerance, price — without the marketing gloss.
The molecules, quickly
Ozempic and Wegovy are both semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes at doses up to 2.0 mg weekly. Wegovy is the same molecule dosed up to 2.4 mg and licensed for weight management. Mounjaro is tirzepatide (Eli Lilly), a dual GLP-1/GIP agonist dosed up to 15 mg weekly.
What the trials show
STEP-1: semaglutide 2.4 mg produced an average 14.9% body-weight loss at 68 weeks. SURMOUNT-1: tirzepatide 15 mg produced an average 20.9% body-weight loss at 72 weeks. SURPASS-2 (diabetes head-to-head): tirzepatide beat semaglutide 1 mg on both HbA1c and weight at every dose tested.
These are averages in trial conditions with lifestyle support. A well-managed real-world course tends to sit in a similar range; a badly managed one under-performs the trials at any dose.
Side effects and tolerance
All three share the same GLP-1 side-effect profile: nausea, fullness, mild GI upset in the first weeks. Mounjaro's dual mechanism can produce slightly more pronounced appetite suppression; whether that reads as 'stronger' or 'harder to tolerate' depends on the individual.
The single biggest predictor of tolerance is how carefully your dose is titrated. Going up too fast causes vomiting; staying too low caps the result. Monthly GP review is not a bureaucratic tick-box — it's what makes the medication work.
Cost in Dubai
Foundation (semaglutide, Wegovy or Ozempic): from AED 1,950 per month. Accelerate (tirzepatide, Mounjaro): from AED 2,450 per month. Complete Metabolic Programme (either molecule + nutrition + lifestyle support): from AED 3,200 per month. All tiers include monthly GP review, baseline and 3-monthly bloods and direct WhatsApp access.
Which one fits — the honest answer
If cost is tight and you tolerate weekly injections, Wegovy is the sensible default. If your weight-loss target is aggressive and cost isn't the constraint, Mounjaro's ceiling is higher. If you have type 2 diabetes and weight loss is a secondary goal, Ozempic is often the right prescription because it's what it was built for.
None of these should be decided from a comparison table. Book a free 15-minute call, tell a GP your history and goals, and get a recommendation based on you.
Questions patients ask.
Is Mounjaro better than Wegovy?+
On average, greater weight loss in trials. Whether it's better for you depends on tolerance, history and budget.
Can I switch between them?+
Yes. Switches happen for tolerance, supply or plateau reasons. A GP will plan the transition — washout and re-titration — rather than swapping cold.
Which is cheapest?+
Semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic) is the lower-cost option; tirzepatide (Mounjaro) sits above. Aafiyah's Foundation tier starts at AED 1,950/month for semaglutide, Accelerate at AED 2,450 for tirzepatide.
