Mounjaro vs Ozempic in Dubai: the licensing difference matters
This comparison is really a licensing question. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for glycaemic control in type-2 diabetes, widely used off-label for weight; Mounjaro is tirzepatide, with weight management inside its evidence base from the start. Comparing them on the scale alone misses the point.

Moving from Ozempic to Mounjaro
This is the single most common switch we handle in Dubai. It is appropriate when you have been at 1 mg or 2 mg for at least three months, adherence is good, and weight has been flat for eight weeks or more.
The switch is not dose-equivalent. You stop semaglutide, wait a week, then start tirzepatide at 2.5 mg and titrate monthly. If you have diabetes we check glucose more closely across the change, because appetite and intake shift before the dose reaches a therapeutic level.
Ozempic in the UAE — what patients get wrong
Ozempic is prescription-only in the UAE. Pens bought abroad, resold through social media or brought in loose without a prescription carry real cold-chain and counterfeit risk, and we will not build a monitoring plan around a pen of unknown provenance.
Because Ozempic is a diabetes medicine, patients with diabetes sometimes assume weight loss is automatic. It is not — the weight effect at diabetes doses is smaller, and combining it with a doctor-led nutrition and review plan is what closes the gap.

Is Ozempic licensed for weight loss in the UAE?+
Ozempic is licensed for type-2 diabetes. Semaglutide licensed specifically for weight management is sold as Wegovy at a higher 2.4 mg dose. A doctor may still prescribe Ozempic where clinically justified, but you should understand which licence your prescription sits under.
Will Mounjaro work if Ozempic stopped working for me?+
Often, yes. Tirzepatide adds GIP receptor activity that semaglutide does not have, and a plateau on one does not predict a plateau on the other. We review adherence, dose, sleep, protein intake and thyroid function first, because a true plateau and an unaddressed lifestyle factor look identical on the scale.
Can I take Mounjaro and Ozempic together?+
No. They act on overlapping pathways and combining them raises side-effect risk without established benefit. If you are moving between them, you stop one, leave a gap of about a week, and restart the other from its lowest dose under GP supervision.
Do I need blood tests before starting either in Dubai?+
Yes. We require a baseline panel covering HbA1c, thyroid function, lipids, liver and kidney function before the first prescription, then repeats every three months. A nurse can take these at your home anywhere in Dubai if attending the clinic is inconvenient.
Which is easier to tolerate day to day?+
Neither is reliably gentler. Ozempic more often causes transient diarrhoea; Mounjaro more often causes constipation and fatigue in the first six weeks. Slow titration, hydration, protein-forward meals and holding a dose step when needed matter more than the brand on the pen.
