Doctor involvement: A GP sets the dressing plan and reviews progress and any signs of infection.

How often will the nurse visit?

It depends on the wound and the dressing. Many wounds need a visit every two to three days; some need daily care at first. The GP sets the frequency and adjusts it as the wound heals.

When does a wound need a doctor rather than a nurse?

Spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, a fever or a wound that opens up should be seen by the GP. Our nurses escalate these the same day.

Questions families ask

Can sutures or clips be removed at home?+

Yes. A nurse can remove sutures and surgical clips at home on the date set by your surgeon, and check the wound at the same visit.

Will the same nurse see my wound each time?+

We aim for the same nurse wherever possible. Each visit is recorded with photographs so any nurse or the GP can see how the wound is progressing.
