Thyroid testing in Dubai.

TSH, free T4, free T3 and antibodies — with a GP who'll interpret the pattern, not just report the number.

What we test, and when

  • · TSHthe sensitive first-line screening marker
  • · Free T4 and free T3the active hormones — added when TSH is abnormal or symptoms don't fit
  • · TPO and thyroglobulin antibodiesidentify Hashimoto's, the commonest cause of hypothyroidism
  • · TRAbconfirms Graves' disease in hyperthyroidism

Who should test

Anyone with fatigue, unexplained weight change, cold or heat intolerance, palpitations, low mood or brain fog. Women planning pregnancy or in early pregnancy. Anyone over 60 or with autoimmune disease in the family. Levothyroxine users need annual TSH.

What treatment looks like

Hypothyroidism: daily levothyroxine, titrated to TSH 0.4–2.5 mIU/L, retested at 6–8 weeks. Hyperthyroidism: usually endocrinology referral for carbimazole, radioactive iodine or thyroidectomy — we coordinate the pathway and stay involved for primary care.

FAQs

What does a thyroid test in Dubai measure?+

Screening starts with TSH. If TSH is abnormal or symptoms are suggestive, we add free T4, free T3, TPO antibodies (Hashimoto's), thyroglobulin antibodies and TRAb (Graves'). For nodules or suspected malignancy we also test calcitonin and refer for ultrasound.

How much does a thyroid test cost?+

TSH alone AED 180. TSH + free T4 AED 280. Full panel (TSH, fT4, fT3, TPO Ab, TG Ab) AED 480. Nurse home visit adds AED 250. Insurance direct billing with Daman, AXA, Bupa, Cigna, Allianz and MetLife.

Do I need to fast?+

No fasting required. Take your morning thyroid medication (levothyroxine) AFTER the blood draw if you're already on treatment — otherwise the level will look artificially high. Avoid biotin supplements for 48 hours; they interfere with thyroid assays.

How fast are results?+

Same-day if drawn before 10am; standard turnaround 24 hours. A senior GP calls you personally to explain the result and — if treatment is needed — starts you on levothyroxine or refers to endocrinology.

What are symptoms of a thyroid problem?+

Underactive (hypothyroid): tiredness, weight gain despite normal eating, cold intolerance, dry skin, hair thinning, constipation, low mood, brain fog, heavy periods. Overactive (hyperthyroid): weight loss, palpitations, anxiety, heat intolerance, tremor, loose stools, insomnia. Many patients feel 'off' before any symptom is specific — that's when TSH becomes useful.

Who should have thyroid testing?+

Anyone with the symptoms above, women planning pregnancy or in the first trimester, anyone with a family history of thyroid disease or autoimmune disease (type 1 diabetes, coeliac, vitiligo), anyone starting amiodarone or lithium, and anyone over 60 as part of routine screening.

Can I have thyroid testing at home?+

Yes. A DHA-licensed nurse comes to your home, apartment or hotel anywhere in Dubai — a 5-minute venous draw, cold-chain to our accredited lab, results in 24 hours. Ideal for patients already on levothyroxine needing an annual TSH check.
