Understanding your allergy test results

Total IgE and specific IgE
Total IgE is a general measure of allergic activity. Specific IgE shows antibodies to one allergen. A higher specific IgE level makes a true allergy more likely, but levels do not reliably predict how severe a reaction will be.
Sensitisation is not the same as allergy
Sensitisation means antibodies are present. Clinical allergy means you actually react when exposed. Your GP looks for results that match the symptoms you have described.
Why molecular components help
ALEX² reports individual proteins as well as whole extracts. Some proteins are more often linked with stronger reactions; others are shared with pollens and may explain milder mouth itching. This helps your GP judge which positives are likely to matter.
Negative and borderline results
A negative result makes allergy less likely but does not rule it out. Borderline results are interpreted with your history, and sometimes repeated or followed by specialist assessment.
When to seek urgent help
If you have swelling of the lips or throat, difficulty breathing or feel faint after exposure to a trigger, call 998 or go to the nearest emergency department. Test results do not replace emergency care.
Questions
Can I read my results without a doctor?
You will receive the report, but a GP review is included because results are easily misread without your history.
Will I need a specialist?
Only if results suggest a risk of severe reactions, are unclear, or you may need specialist treatment.
