Sinus Infection · Same-Day GP · Home or Clinic

Sinusitis in Dubai — diagnosed and treated properly, same day.

Blocked nose, facial pressure over the cheeks and forehead, thick discharge, reduced smell — classic sinusitis. Most cases are viral and clear with the right treatment; some are bacterial and need antibiotics; a few are chronic and need proper workup. A British-trained GP will tell you which yours is, prescribe correctly, and arrange ENT or CT sinus when needed.

Why it happens in Dubai

Viral upper respiratory infection

The commonest trigger — a cold that inflames the sinus lining and blocks drainage. Usually resolves in 7–10 days with supportive care.

Bacterial superinfection

When mucus sits stagnant, bacteria multiply. Suspected when symptoms worsen after day 5, last > 10 days, or come with fever and one-sided facial pain.

Dubai environment — AC, dust, sand

Dry recirculated air, sand storms and dust load the nasal passages and disrupt the mucosal defence layer.

Allergies

Chronic allergic rhinitis (dust mites, pollen, cats) keeps the sinuses inflamed and prone to recurrent infection.

Anatomy — deviated septum, polyps

Structural issues stop the sinuses draining and cause recurrent sinusitis. We refer to ENT for a nasal endoscopy when this is suspected.

Air travel

Frequent flying with an already inflamed nose causes barotrauma and worsens sinus drainage.

  • · Allergy workup and antihistamines for allergic drivers
  • · Referral to imaging partner for CT sinuses if chronic or complicated
  • · ENT referral when nasal polyps, deviated septum or chronic sinusitis suspected

  • · Confusion, neck stiffness, or severe headache

If symptoms are severe or sudden, call 998 (Dubai ambulance) or attend A&E immediately.

FAQs

How do I know if I have sinusitis vs. a regular cold?+

Facial pressure or pain over the cheeks/forehead, thick discolored nasal discharge, blocked nose lasting more than 10 days, and reduced sense of smell all point to sinusitis. A cold usually improves inside a week; sinusitis persists or worsens after day 7–10.

Do I need antibiotics for sinusitis?+

Only about 1 in 5 sinus infections are bacterial and benefit from antibiotics. Most are viral and resolve with nasal steroid spray, saline irrigation, decongestants and pain relief. Our GPs prescribe strictly on clinical indication — persistent symptoms > 10 days, worsening after initial improvement, or high fever with unilateral facial pain.

Why is sinusitis so common in Dubai?+

Constant air conditioning dries the sinus lining, dust and sand storms load the nose with irritants, indoor humidity swings from 20% to 70%, and frequent long-haul flights disrupt sinus drainage. Add in seasonal allergies and viral respiratory bugs and Dubai residents get repeated flare-ups.

Can a doctor see me at home for sinusitis?+

Yes. Our doctor on call reaches your home, hotel or office in Dubai in 60–90 minutes, 24/7. We examine, prescribe, and arrange a nasal endoscopy or CT sinus referral if you need one.

What is chronic sinusitis?+

Sinus inflammation lasting more than 12 weeks despite treatment. Requires proper workup — allergy testing, nasal endoscopy, and often a CT scan of the sinuses. We coordinate the whole pathway with an ENT specialist when indicated.

Can you issue a sick leave certificate?+

Yes — after a real consultation our DHA-licensed GPs issue a valid sick leave certificate the same day, accepted by all UAE employers.

What can I do at home right now?+

Steam inhalation twice daily, saline nasal rinse (Neilmed or equivalent), sleep with your head elevated, drink 2L water, and take paracetamol/ibuprofen for pain. If no improvement in 48 hours or you have a fever, book the GP.
