Breathlessness (shortness of breath)
New or worsening breathlessness always deserves a medical assessment. Sudden severe breathlessness, breathlessness with chest pain, leg swelling, coughing up blood, blue lips or fainting is a medical emergency — call 998. Gradual breathlessness on exertion can be due to asthma, anaemia, weight, deconditioning, heart or lung disease, and needs a GP assessment with tests.
