The Dubai "AC cough" — what it is, and how to stop it.
A dry, tickly cough that lingers for weeks after a night in a cold apartment or a long meeting under an office vent. Almost every long-term Dubai resident gets it. Most cases are airway irritation — but a stubborn cough can also be post-viral bronchitis, asthma, silent reflux or a mould-triggered allergy. A British-trained GP will diagnose the real cause and prescribe what actually works.
Why it happens in Dubai
Cold, dry recirculated air
AC systems strip moisture from the air and the airway mucosa, which impairs your natural cough-defence layer and leaves the throat raw.
Unserviced units — dust, mould, MVHR grime
Filters and coils that haven't been cleaned in 6+ months push mould spores, dust and bacteria straight into your bronchi.
Sudden temperature swings
Walking from 42°C outdoors into a 19°C atrium triggers bronchospasm — a classic Dubai trigger for previously silent asthma.
Post-viral hyperreactivity
After a chest infection or the Dubai flu, the airways stay twitchy for 6–8 weeks; AC exposure keeps re-triggering the cough.
Reflux and post-nasal drip
Acid reflux and sinus mucus dripping down the back of the throat are the two most-missed causes of a chronic dry cough.
What we do for you

- · Inhaler prescription (reliever, preventer or combination) — often the game-changer
- · Antihistamine and nasal steroid where allergy or drip is the driver

- · Nebuliser on the spot for wheeze — home or clinic
- · Referral to imaging partner for chest X-ray if the cough is > 3 weeks
- · Sick leave certificate when needed
- · Lifestyle plan: AC servicing, humidifier, hydration, sleep position
Right service for you
- · Coughing up blood
- · Unexplained weight loss with a chronic cough
- · Severe breathlessness or chest pain
- · Cough persisting > 8 weeks despite treatment
If symptoms are severe or sudden, call 998 (Dubai ambulance) or attend A&E immediately.
FAQs
What is an 'AC cough'?+
A dry, tickly, persistent cough triggered or worsened by prolonged exposure to air conditioning. Cold, dry, recirculated air dehydrates the airway lining, dust and mould in poorly-serviced units irritate the throat, and sudden hot-to-cold transitions inflame the bronchi.
How do I know if it's really the AC or something else?+
That's exactly what the GP consultation is for. We'll examine your chest, check oxygen saturation, ask about reflux and allergies, and — if it lasts over 3 weeks — arrange a chest X-ray. Common overlooked causes are post-viral bronchitis, adult-onset asthma, silent reflux and post-nasal drip.
How do I stop an AC cough?+
Short-term: humidifier by the bed, saline nasal spray, lozenges, honey, and 2L water/day. Medium-term: service your AC (filter + coil clean), keep it above 23°C, avoid direct airflow on your face at night. If it lasts more than 10 days, see a GP — an inhaler, antihistamine or short steroid course often clears what home measures can't.
Can a doctor visit me at home for an AC cough?+
Yes. Our doctor on call reaches your home, hotel or office in Dubai within 60–90 minutes, 24/7. We bring a full respiratory kit — pulse oximeter, peak flow, nebuliser, inhalers and prescription pad.
Do I need antibiotics?+
Usually no. AC coughs are almost always non-infectious irritation, viral bronchitis or asthma. Antibiotics only help when we diagnose a bacterial chest infection — which is uncommon. Our GPs prescribe strictly on clinical indication, not by default.
What if the cough has lasted more than 3 weeks?+
That's a red flag worth investigating. We'll arrange a chest X-ray via our imaging partner, run bloods, check peak flow, and consider referral to a respiratory specialist. Chronic cough always deserves a real workup.
Can you treat kids with an AC cough at home?+
Yes — our paediatric-experienced GPs assess children at home, run nebulisers on the spot for wheeze, and coordinate with your child's paediatrician if needed.
