Preparing for an STI test in Dubai.
Small timing decisions change the accuracy of the result — here's exactly how to prepare.
Window periods
- · Chlamydia / gonorrhoea PCR — 2 weeks
- · HIV 4th-gen (Ag/Ab combo) — 4 weeks, definitive at 12
- · Syphilis serology — 3 weeks, definitive at 12
- · Hepatitis B / C — 4–12 weeks
On the day
Do not urinate for at least 1 hour before a urine STI sample — first-catch urine gives the highest DNA yield. Skip vaginal creams, douching or lubricants for 24 hours before a swab. No fasting is required for blood tests.
Medications
Do not start or stop prescribed medication without medical advice. Tell the GP about antibiotics taken in the last 3 weeks, HIV pre- or post-exposure prophylaxis, and any hormonal therapy. All of these change how a result should be interpreted.
FAQs
How long after exposure should I wait to test?+
Window periods differ by infection: chlamydia and gonorrhoea PCR at 2 weeks, HIV 4th-generation antigen/antibody at 4 weeks (definitive at 12), syphilis at 3 weeks (definitive at 12), hepatitis B and C at 4–12 weeks. Test early if symptomatic; the GP will advise on repeat testing.
Should I hold my urine before a urine STI test?+
Yes — do not urinate for at least 1 hour before giving a urine sample. First-catch urine (the first 20 ml of the stream) contains the highest concentration of chlamydia and gonorrhoea DNA.
Can I take antibiotics before an STI test?+
No. Antibiotics taken in the last 3 weeks can produce false-negative results for bacterial STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis). Tell the doctor about any recent course; the GP will decide whether to test now or delay.
What should I tell the doctor?+
Number and type of recent partners, condom use, any symptoms, previous STI diagnoses, current medications and allergies. Everything is confidential and held under DHA data-protection rules — full disclosure improves the accuracy of the test panel we choose.
