AEO · CRP · Preparation

Preparing for a CRP test in Dubai.

Five minutes of context saves a wasted result — here's what to do (and not do) before the nurse arrives.

The short checklist

  • · No fasting needed
  • · Drink water — well-hydrated veins draw faster
  • · Skip strenuous exercise for 48 hours
  • · Take usual medication (unless a doctor says otherwise)
  • · Note recent antibiotics, steroids or biologics

Things that raise CRP

Infection, trauma, surgery, tattoos and piercings (up to 6 weeks), chronic inflammatory conditions (RA, IBD, psoriasis), pregnancy, obesity, and intense exercise. These aren't reasons to avoid the test — they're reasons to tell the doctor.

Things that lower CRP

Steroids, NSAIDs, statins and biologics all suppress the CRP response. If you're on any of them, the result must be interpreted in that context — a "normal" CRP does not rule out infection.

FAQs

Do I need to fast for a CRP test?+

No. CRP is not affected by food, coffee or water. You can eat and drink normally before the test. If a lipid or fasting glucose panel is being drawn at the same visit, fast for 10–12 hours for those.

Should I stop medication before a CRP?+

Do not stop prescribed medication without speaking to a doctor. Tell the GP about steroids, NSAIDs, biologics (adalimumab, infliximab) and recent antibiotics — all can lower CRP and change how the result is interpreted.

Does exercise affect CRP?+

Intense endurance exercise (marathon, long HIIT, weight session to failure) can raise CRP for 24–72 hours. Avoid strenuous training for 48 hours before the test if you can, and mention any recent hard workout to the doctor.

What should I mention to the nurse?+

Any current infection symptoms, recent injuries or surgery, tattoos or piercings in the last 6 weeks, chronic conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, psoriasis), and any medications or supplements. Context changes the interpretation.

Healthcare should feel simple.
