Workplace Burnout in Dubai: How to Recognise It and How to Recover

Burnout is the most common reason executives walk into our Business Bay clinic exhausted. Here is how a British-trained GP assesses and treats it.

Burnout is now a diagnosable condition

The WHO ICD-11 defines burnout as an occupational phenomenon arising from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one's job or feelings of negativism/cynicism related to it; reduced professional efficacy. It is not a personality flaw; it is a measurable physiological and psychological state.

In Dubai, burnout presents differently from depression because the cultural narrative around success masks the symptoms. Patients describe themselves as 'fine, just tired' until they aren't.

Burnout vs depression: not the same thing

Burnout improves on holiday; depression doesn't. Burnout is tied to a context (usually work); depression pervades all domains. Burnout often coexists with energy for non-work activities; depression flattens enjoyment globally. Burnout responds primarily to changes in workload, autonomy and recovery; depression usually requires specific psychological and sometimes pharmacological treatment.

They overlap. Chronic burnout untreated frequently progresses to depression, anxiety disorder or both.

Physical symptoms that suggest burnout (not 'just stress')

Sleep disruption — early morning waking, broken sleep despite tiredness. Persistent fatigue not relieved by rest. Tension headaches and migraines. Reduced libido. New gastrointestinal symptoms (reflux, IBS-type). Recurrent infections — repeated colds, slow wound healing. Weight changes in either direction. Palpitations and chest tightness. Reduced exercise tolerance.

What to test for

Burnout symptoms overlap with several treatable medical conditions. A proper workup includes: full blood count, ferritin, TSH, free T4, HbA1c, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, magnesium, testosterone (men) or full hormone panel (women), morning cortisol, ECG if palpitations.

Roughly 30% of patients presenting with classic burnout symptoms have at least one of: iron deficiency, subclinical hypothyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, perimenopause, low testosterone or sleep apnoea. Treat the medical condition first; burnout symptoms often improve substantially.

Sleep is the foundation, not the bonus

No recovery from burnout is possible without restoring sleep. Practical interventions: fixed wake time 7 days a week, magnesium glycinate 200–400mg at night, no screens 60 minutes before bed, bedroom cool and dark, no alcohol within 3 hours of bed, caffeine cutoff at 1pm.

If snoring, witnessed apnoeas, daytime sleepiness or morning headaches — book a home sleep study. Untreated sleep apnoea is one of the most common drivers of treatment-resistant fatigue in Dubai men.

The clinical recovery framework we use

Step 1: medical workup and treatment of any identified conditions. Step 2: sleep restoration over 4–6 weeks. Step 3: workload audit — what can be delegated, deferred, dropped. Step 4: boundaried recovery — protected non-work blocks (mornings, weekends, holidays) with no email. Step 5: psychological therapy if symptoms persist (CBT and ACT have strongest evidence). Step 6: medication if depression or anxiety disorder coexists. Step 7: longer recovery planning — many people need 3–12 months to fully recover from severe burnout.

Returning to the same workload that caused burnout, without changes, leads to recurrence within 12 months in most cases.

When medication helps

Antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs) are appropriate when burnout has progressed to clinical depression or significant anxiety disorder, not for pure burnout. Beta-blockers (propranolol) short-term for prominent physical anxiety symptoms. Short courses of sleep medication only as a bridge while behavioural sleep work takes effect — long-term use causes dependence and worsens sleep architecture.

Confidentiality for Dubai executives

Many senior professionals in Dubai delay seeking help because they fear it will affect their visa, employment or reputation. Private GP and psychiatric consultations are not shared by us with employers without your written consent, and sick certificates can be issued without specifying a diagnosis. Be aware that as a DHA-licensed clinic we are legally required to upload clinical records to NABIDH (the Dubai unified health record); other licensed UAE healthcare providers and, in some cases, insurers with NABIDH access rights may be able to view records there — we cannot control onward access by those parties.

Honest cost in Dubai

GP burnout consultation (60 minutes): AED 700. Full medical workup: AED 1,500–2,200. Psychology session: AED 600–1,200. Psychiatric review if needed: AED 1,200–2,000. Ongoing therapy: typically 8–12 sessions over 3–4 months. Most international insurance plans cover mental health to varying degrees.

Frequently asked

Can a GP diagnose burnout in Dubai?

Yes. A GP can assess for burnout, exclude medical mimics, treat reversible causes, prescribe where appropriate and refer to psychology or psychiatry for therapy or specialist care.

Will taking time off for burnout affect my visa?

No. Short-term sick leave and medical care are not reported to immigration. Long-term sickness affecting fitness to work is handled case-by-case under UAE labour law.
