What Your Doctor Should Tell You After a Blood Test

A result is data. A results conversation is care. Here are the five things a doctor should cover after your bloods.

Written and medically reviewed by Dr. Shahbaz Afzal, MBBS, MRCGP — GMC-registered British-trained GP · Published 13 August 2026 · Updated 13 August 2026

1. What the abnormal marker means for you

Reference ranges describe populations, not people. A ferritin at the low end means something different in a menstruating 30-year-old than in a 65-year-old man, where it may warrant investigation rather than a supplement.

2. What is normal for you

Your own baseline is more informative than the range. A creatinine that has drifted within normal limits across three years still tells a story — but only if someone is holding all three results.

3. What to actually change

'Improve your diet' is not a plan. A results conversation should end with specific, dated actions: a dose, a food change, an exercise target or a referral.

4. What to recheck, and when

Most abnormal results need a repeat before they need a treatment. Your doctor should name the marker, the interval and who is booking it.

5. What needs no action

Half of the red arrows on a lab report are clinically irrelevant. Being told which ones — explicitly — is part of the job, and it is the part a PDF cannot do.

At Aafiyah, a named GP calls every patient with their results and works through exactly these five points.

Frequently asked

Should a doctor call me with blood test results in Dubai?

For anything beyond a fully normal screening panel, yes. At Aafiyah a named GP calls with every result set, including normal ones, so you know what they mean rather than guessing.

What if my results arrive without any explanation?

Ask for a review consultation with a doctor who can see your history. An interpretation without context is guesswork, and lab comments are not a clinical opinion.

How soon after a blood test should I hear back?

Most standard panels in Dubai return within 24–48 hours, and you should hear from a clinician the same day results land.
