Viral Fever in Dubai: When to Call a Doctor

Viral fevers spike in Dubai every season change. Most settle with fluids and rest. A few need urgent review. Here's how to tell the difference.

What counts as a fever

Temperature over 38°C measured under the tongue or in the ear is a fever. Under 38°C is a raised temperature, not a fever, and rarely needs treatment on its own. Fever itself is not dangerous — it's the immune response working. What matters is the cause and the trajectory.

Home care that works

Paracetamol 1g every 6 hours, maximum 4g/24h, brings temperature down and eases muscle aches. Ibuprofen 400mg every 8 hours is an alternative if you don't have kidney, stomach or heart issues — take with food. Don't combine both routinely; alternate only if a doctor advises.

Fluids. 2.5–3 L water daily for adults, more if sweating heavily. Add a rehydration sachet (Dioralyte, Pedialyte) if you're losing fluid via diarrhoea or vomiting.

Rest. Sleep is when the immune system does most of its work. Working through a fever prolongs the illness and increases the risk of complications.

Cool room, light clothing. Don't wrap up — that traps heat.

Red flags: call a doctor same-day

Temperature above 39.5°C not responding to paracetamol. Fever lasting over 3 days. Breathlessness or chest pain. Severe or unusual headache. Neck stiffness or intolerance of bright light. A rash that doesn't blanch under a glass. Confusion or unusual drowsiness. Signs of dehydration (dark urine, dizziness, no urine for 8+ hours). Pregnancy, age over 70, immunocompromise or major chronic illness.

For children: any fever over 39°C, any fever under 3 months of age, refusing fluids, unusual sleepiness, or persistent vomiting — call same-day.

When testing matters

COVID-19 remains a differential. Influenza A and B still cause severe illness. Dengue is uncommon but reported in Dubai. A GP will decide which of these to swab or blood-test based on symptoms, travel history and exposure. In-clinic or home visits both include rapid testing where indicated.

Frequently asked

Can I get a doctor at home for fever in Dubai?

Yes. Aafiyah Care runs 24/7 home doctor visits across Dubai — Marina, Palm, Downtown, Business Bay, Jumeirah, Dubai Hills, JBR and every hotel. Typical arrival 60–90 minutes; same GP roster as the clinic.

How long should a viral fever last?

Most viral fevers peak on days 2–3 and settle by day 4–5. Any fever lasting over 5 days needs a GP review to rule out bacterial superinfection, atypical pneumonia, dengue or other causes.

Should I take antibiotics for a viral fever?

No. Antibiotics don't work against viruses and cause harm (side effects, resistance, microbiome disruption). A GP will only prescribe if a bacterial infection is suspected on examination or testing.
