Why UTIs spike in Dubai
Dubai's heat and air-conditioning together cause significant dehydration — and dehydrated urine is the single biggest driver of urinary tract infections. We see UTI cases rise across the summer months and during travel.
Symptoms to look out for
Burning or stinging when you pass urine, going far more often than usual, urgency, lower abdominal pain, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and sometimes a mild fever. Blood in the urine, back pain or shivering means the infection may have reached the kidneys — that needs a doctor today.
Same-day treatment
Most uncomplicated UTIs in women clear with a 3–5 day course of the right antibiotic, alongside hydration and over-the-counter pain relief. A simple urine dip in clinic confirms the diagnosis; a culture is sent off if the infection is recurrent or severe. Men with UTI symptoms always need to be seen in person.
When to see a doctor urgently
Fever above 38.5°C, back/flank pain, vomiting, visible blood in urine, pregnancy, recurrent UTIs, or symptoms in a man or child — book a same-day GP appointment, in clinic or at home.
Why heat and dehydration matter
UTIs are more common in summer in Dubai for two related reasons: lower fluid intake relative to losses, and concentrated urine that bacteria thrive in. Add high-AC environments that mask thirst and long working hours that delay bathroom trips, and the conditions are ideal. Hydration alone prevents a meaningful proportion of recurrent UTIs in women living here.
When a UTI needs more than antibiotics
Fever above 38.5°C, flank or back pain, nausea and vomiting, or symptoms persisting beyond 48 hours of treatment suggest pyelonephritis (kidney involvement). This needs urgent assessment, longer antibiotic courses and sometimes intravenous therapy. Recurrent UTIs (three or more a year) also warrant investigation — including imaging and sometimes referral to a urologist.
How we treat it same-day
A urine dipstick at home or clinic confirms most uncomplicated UTIs in minutes. A short course of nitrofurantoin or trimethoprim, hydration, and a follow-up call at 48 hours resolves the majority. For recurrent infections we run a midstream culture, review post-coital prophylaxis options, and address risk factors like dehydration and constipation.
Men with UTIs need different workup
UTIs in men are uncommon enough that the first episode warrants investigation — typically a urine culture, prostate examination, and consideration of imaging or urology referral. Recurrent infections in men, or any UTI in a man under 50, should not be dismissed as a simple infection.
Preventing the next one
Aim for 2–3 litres of water daily in Dubai's climate. Urinate after intercourse. Avoid prolonged delays in bathroom trips during long meetings or flights. For recurrent post-coital UTIs, single-dose post-coital prophylaxis is highly effective and well tolerated. For peri-menopausal women with recurrent UTIs, topical vaginal oestrogen has strong evidence and is often underused.
