Mounjaro vs Wegovy vs Ozempic in Dubai — What's Actually Different?
Three names, two molecules, one big question — which GLP-1 medication is right for you? A British GP walks through the real differences.
The short answer
Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide. Semaglutide acts on a single appetite hormone (GLP-1). Tirzepatide acts on two (GLP-1 and GIP) — which is why it tends to produce slightly greater weight loss in head-to-head trials. The longer answer is more interesting, and it matters for your decision.
Ozempic vs Wegovy — same drug, different licence
Both are semaglutide made by Novo Nordisk. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is licensed specifically for weight management at higher doses. In Dubai you'll see both prescribed for weight loss in practice, but Wegovy's dose curve is designed for that purpose. Average weight loss in the STEP trials at the 2.4 mg weekly dose: around 15% of body weight at 68 weeks, alongside lifestyle support.
Mounjaro — the dual-agonist
Tirzepatide is the first dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, participants on the highest tirzepatide dose lost an average of around 20–22% of body weight at 72 weeks. Side effect profile is broadly similar to semaglutide — nausea, fullness and digestive changes in the first weeks — but the weight loss ceiling appears higher.
Which is right for you?
There's no universal winner. Cost, supply, your tolerance for side effects, prior medication history, and how your body responds in the first 8–12 weeks all matter. A GP-led approach starts with the lowest effective dose, monitors response, and adjusts. That's the part missing from a pharmacy-counter prescription — and it's exactly what your monthly review is for.
What proper monitoring looks like
Baseline bloods (kidney, liver, HbA1c, lipids, B12, ferritin). 3-monthly repeats. Monthly GP review with dose titration. Honest conversations about muscle mass, nutrition and what happens if you stop. That's the standard at Aafiyah's Metabolic Health Programme — not optional extras.
Bottom line
Whichever molecule you start with, the medication is only half the story. The other half is the doctor reading your bloods every three months and the plan that wraps around it. If you'd like to discuss which fits your profile, book a free 15-minute GP call via our Metabolic Health Programme.
Frequently asked
Is Mounjaro better than Wegovy?
On average, tirzepatide (Mounjaro) produces slightly greater weight loss in trials than semaglutide (Wegovy). But 'better' depends on your tolerance, response and budget — which is why a GP review beats a Google search.
Can I switch between Wegovy and Mounjaro?
Yes, switches happen — usually for tolerance, supply or plateau reasons. A GP will plan the transition, including washout and re-titration, rather than swapping cold.
