Kids' Fever in Dubai: A Parent's Guide
Most childhood fevers in Dubai are viral and safe to manage at home. But some patterns warrant urgent review. Here's a doctor's clear framework for parents.
What counts as a fever in a child
Temperature over 38°C measured under the arm, in the ear or rectally is a fever. Fever itself is not the problem — it's a normal immune response and doesn't damage the child. What matters is the cause, the trajectory, and how the child looks and behaves.
Medication doses by weight
Paracetamol: 15 mg per kg every 4–6 hours, maximum 4 doses in 24 hours. A 10 kg one-year-old gets 150 mg (5 mL of the 120 mg / 5 mL suspension is roughly 5 mL — use the syringe supplied).
Ibuprofen: 10 mg per kg every 6–8 hours, only in children over 3 months who are drinking, not dehydrated, and don't have chickenpox or bleeding disorders.
It's safe to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen every 3 hours if a single agent isn't controlling the temperature and the child is uncomfortable. Never routinely combine both — a doctor will advise if this is appropriate.
Red flags — call same-day or urgent
Any fever in a baby under 3 months — always urgent, non-negotiable.
Fever over 39°C in a child 3–6 months.
Fever lasting over 5 days.
Refusing all fluids for over 6 hours, or fewer than 4 wet nappies / urinations in 24 hours.
Unusual drowsiness, floppiness, or difficulty waking.
Breathlessness, rapid breathing, chest recessions, grunting.
A rash that doesn't blanch under a glass — treat as meningitis until proven otherwise, call 998.
A seizure — first one always needs urgent review even if it settles quickly.
Any parent gut feeling that 'something is wrong'. Trust it — call.
Home care that works
Fluids in small frequent sips or sucks. Milk, water, oral rehydration solution, ice lollies — whatever they'll take.
Light clothing, cool but not cold room. Don't wrap up or sponge with cold water — both trigger shivering and paradoxically raise core temperature.
Rest. Screen time is fine if it keeps them calm and hydrated.
Recheck temperature every 2–3 hours and reassess how they look, not just the number.
When to book a home doctor
Same-day home paediatric visits are available across Dubai — Marina, Palm, Downtown, Business Bay, Jumeirah, Dubai Hills, JBR, all hotels. A GP will examine the throat, ears, chest and abdomen, take a urine sample if indicated, rapid-test for strep, flu or COVID, and start treatment or arrange onward review as needed. Better than a 2am ER wait with a young child.
Frequently asked
Is a fever of 39°C in a child dangerous?
The number alone isn't dangerous — how the child looks, behaves and drinks matters more. A comfortable, drinking, alert child at 39.5°C is less concerning than a drowsy, refusing-fluids child at 38.5°C. Under 3 months, however, ANY fever is a red flag.
Can I give paracetamol and ibuprofen together?
It's safer to alternate them every 3 hours than to give both simultaneously. Alternating is reasonable if a single agent isn't controlling temperature or discomfort. Never exceed the maximum daily dose of either. A GP can advise for individual cases.
