IV Rehydration in Dubai's Summer Heat: What Actually Helps
Dubai's summer produces genuine clinical dehydration — and a lot of unnecessary drips. The distinction is worth knowing.
Heat exhaustion versus heat stroke
Heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, thirst, headache, nausea, cramps, dizziness, weakness, a fast pulse. The patient is oriented and sweating. This is treatable at home.
Heat stroke: core temperature above 40°C, confusion, slurred speech, seizures, collapse, and often hot dry skin because sweating has failed. This is a medical emergency with a real mortality rate. Call 998, move the patient to cool, remove clothing and start active cooling while you wait. Do not wait for a home visit or a drip.
When oral rehydration is the better medicine
For mild to moderate dehydration in an adult who can drink and keep fluids down, oral rehydration salts are as effective as intravenous fluids and carry none of the cannulation risk. This is well-established, not a cost-saving compromise.
Plain water alone is the common mistake — in heavy sweating it replaces volume without sodium, and in extreme cases dilutes it dangerously. Use an ORS sachet, or a properly balanced electrolyte drink.
Sugary sports drinks and iced coffee do not rehydrate a genuinely depleted worker or athlete.
When IV fluids genuinely help
Vomiting or diarrhoea that prevents oral intake — the gut route is unavailable, so the vein is the route.
Persistent dizziness on standing, minimal urine output, or a resting tachycardia that does not settle after an hour of drinking.
Significant exertional dehydration after outdoor work or endurance training in summer conditions.
Elderly patients, who thirst poorly and decompensate faster, and anyone on diuretics.
In each case a doctor should confirm that fluid is what is needed and how much — an elderly patient with heart failure can be harmed by the same litre that helps a marathon runner.
What the drip should — and should not — contain
For dehydration, the useful component is balanced crystalloid fluid with the right electrolytes. That is the treatment.
The vitamin additions marketed with 'hydration drips' do not treat dehydration. They are not harmful in most patients, but they are not why you feel better afterwards — the fluid is.
Repeated drips for chronic tiredness through the summer is a pattern worth investigating rather than repeating. Fatigue that persists deserves blood tests — thyroid, iron, HbA1c, vitamin D — not a standing infusion appointment.
Doctor-screened IV at home
Aafiyah screens every IV request with a British-trained GP before approval: cardiac and kidney function, medications, allergy and G6PD history, and whether fluid is even the right answer today. A DHA-licensed nurse from our Business Bay clinic then delivers and stays for the infusion.
That screening step is the difference between doctor-led care and a marketplace app that dispatches whichever clinician is free to administer a drip nobody clinical has assessed you for.
Frequently asked
How do I know if I am dehydrated in Dubai's summer?
Dark urine, passing urine less often, thirst, headache, dizziness on standing and fatigue. If you are dizzy on standing or barely passing urine despite drinking, you need clinical assessment.
Is a hydration drip better than drinking water?
Not for mild dehydration in someone who can drink — oral rehydration salts work as well and avoid a cannula. IV fluid is better when vomiting blocks drinking or dehydration is significant.
How fast does IV rehydration work?
Most patients feel substantially better within 30–60 minutes of a balanced fluid infusion, because the volume is restored directly rather than waiting on gut absorption.
What is the emergency number for heat stroke in Dubai?
998 for an ambulance. Heat stroke — confusion, collapse, temperature above 40°C — is an emergency and must not be managed with a home drip.
Can outdoor workers get IV fluids at home in Dubai?
Yes, after doctor screening. We also advise on prevention: ORS through the shift, scheduled shade breaks and monitoring urine colour, which prevents far more episodes than any drip treats.
