Home Remedies for a Sore Throat in Dubai
Most sore throats in Dubai are viral and settle in 3–5 days. A minority are bacterial (strep) and benefit from antibiotics. Here's what works, and how to tell.
What causes sore throat
Around 80% are viral — common cold, flu, COVID, adenovirus. These settle in 3–5 days with fluids, rest and simple pain relief. Around 15% are bacterial strep, which responds to antibiotics. The remaining 5% are less common: reflux, allergic (post-nasal drip), overuse (shouting), smoking or vape irritation, or rarely something needing specialist review.
Home remedies that help
Warm salt-water gargle. Half a teaspoon of salt in warm water, 3 times daily. Simple, cheap, effective.
Warm fluids with honey and lemon. Coats and soothes the pharynx; honey has genuine analgesic effect.
Paracetamol 1g every 6 hours or ibuprofen 400mg every 8 hours. Both reduce pain and inflammation.
Medicated lozenges. Benzocaine, lidocaine or hexylresorcinol lozenges give short-term numbing relief. Simple sugar lozenges are almost as good — the swallowing stimulates saliva.
Humidify the bedroom to 40–50% RH — dry AC air prolongs throat irritation.
Avoid alcohol, smoking and vaping; all delay recovery.
Signs it might be strep — get a rapid test
The Centor criteria: (1) fever over 38°C, (2) tender enlarged front-of-neck lymph nodes, (3) white spots or exudate on the tonsils, (4) absence of cough. Three or four features means strep is likely and a rapid test is worth doing. Rapid strep tests give a result in 10 minutes; positive means a short course of penicillin V or amoxicillin.
When to see a doctor urgently
Severe one-sided pain, drooling, difficulty swallowing, muffled ('hot potato') voice or difficulty opening the mouth can indicate quinsy (peritonsillar abscess) and need urgent same-day review. Breathlessness or stridor is a 999 / 998 call. Any sore throat over 5 days, or with a rash, warrants a GP visit.
Frequently asked
How long does a sore throat last?
Viral sore throats settle in 3–5 days. Strep responds within 24–48 hours of antibiotics. A sore throat lasting over 5 days, or one-sided severe pain with drooling, needs a GP review to rule out abscess, mononucleosis or other causes.
Should I take antibiotics for a sore throat?
Only if a rapid test or clinical assessment confirms strep. Antibiotics don't help viral sore throats (the vast majority), and unnecessary courses cause side effects and resistance. A GP can decide with a 10-minute rapid test.
Can I get a strep test at home in Dubai?
Yes. Aafiyah's home doctor visits carry rapid strep test kits — result in 10 minutes at your kitchen table. Positive means antibiotics prescribed and dispensed the same visit; negative usually means supportive care and safety-netting.
