Home Remedies for a Dry Cough in Dubai (Humidity Edition)

Dry cough is one of the most common complaints we hear in Dubai — driven by AC dryness, humidity swings, dust and post-viral irritation. Here's what actually helps.

Written and medically reviewed by Dr. Shahbaz Afzal, MBBS, MRCGP — GMC-registered British-trained GP · Published 1 June 2026 · Updated 15 July 2026

Why dry cough is so common in Dubai

Three things drive it. First, indoor AC keeps air at 20–24°C but strips humidity down to 20–30% — well below the 40–60% range airways prefer. Second, stepping from cold AC into 40°C, 80% humidity outdoor air is a constant airway insult. Third, fine desert dust and construction PM2.5 sit high most of the year and irritate the pharynx even at levels that don't trigger asthma alarms.

Add post-viral cough (which can persist 6–8 weeks after a common cold) and reflux from late dinners, and dry cough becomes the single most common respiratory complaint we see in the clinic.

Home remedies that are worth trying

Humidify. A cool-mist humidifier next to the bed, aiming for 40–50% relative humidity, is the single most effective intervention we recommend. Clean it weekly — a mouldy humidifier makes cough worse.

Warm fluids with honey. Sip warm water with a teaspoon of honey and lemon every hour. Honey has genuine cough-suppressant evidence (not just folklore) in trials against placebo. Avoid in children under 12 months.

Salt-water gargle. Half a teaspoon of salt in warm water, twice daily. Reduces pharyngeal irritation.

Saline nasal spray. Post-nasal drip is a common driver — a saline rinse clears it.

Move AC vents. Direct cold airflow on the throat overnight is a common overlooked trigger. Redirect vents, or run the AC one degree warmer.

When to see a doctor

Book a GP review if cough persists over 3 weeks, wakes you at night, comes with fever above 38°C, breathlessness, wheeze, chest pain, weight loss, or coughing up blood. Also if you're on an ACE inhibitor for blood pressure — that class causes a dry cough in around 10% of patients, and switching class fixes it in days.

In-clinic we can spirometry-test for asthma, examine for post-viral airway hyperreactivity, screen for reflux, and image the chest if indicated. Same-day GP calls and home visits available across Dubai.

Frequently asked

Can Dubai's AC actually cause a cough?

Yes. AC air at 20–30% relative humidity dries the pharyngeal and tracheal mucosa, which triggers a persistent tickly cough. Humidifying to 40–50% RH and redirecting cold airflow overnight resolves most AC-driven coughs within a week.

How long is 'too long' for a cough?

Under 3 weeks is acute (usually post-viral, self-limiting). 3–8 weeks is subacute. Over 8 weeks is chronic and always warrants a GP assessment — differential includes asthma, reflux, post-nasal drip, ACE inhibitor use and, rarely, more serious causes.

Does honey really help cough?

Yes — meta-analyses in children and adults show honey outperforms placebo and matches dextromethorphan for night-time cough. A teaspoon before bed is a reasonable first step in anyone over 12 months old.

Should I take antibiotics for a dry cough?

Almost never. The overwhelming majority of dry coughs are viral or irritant. Antibiotics don't help viral cough and drive resistance. A GP will only prescribe them for a confirmed bacterial chest infection, atypical pneumonia or specific indications.
