Heat Exhaustion vs Heat Stroke: A Dubai Summer Guide

Dubai routinely hits 45°C in summer with 70%+ humidity. Heat illness moves fast — from tiredness to a medical emergency in under an hour. Here's how to spot each stage.

Dubai's heat is genuinely dangerous

Between May and September, mid-afternoon temperatures routinely reach 42–48°C with humidity that pushes the heat index far higher. Outdoor workers, endurance exercisers, tourists unused to the climate, children, older adults, pregnant women and anyone on diuretics, beta-blockers or antipsychotics are at elevated risk. Heat illness kills people every summer in the UAE — usually preventably.

Heat exhaustion — recognise and act

Symptoms: heavy sweating, fatigue, headache, nausea, dizziness, muscle cramps, cool clammy skin, feeling faint. Body temperature normal or slightly raised.

Action: move to a cool shaded or air-conditioned space, lie down with legs elevated, sip cool water or a rehydration solution (500–1000 mL over 30–60 min), remove excess clothing, apply cool wet towels to neck, armpits and groin. Recovery usually within 30–60 minutes.

If symptoms don't improve within an hour, or worsen, treat as evolving heat stroke — call a doctor.

Heat stroke — call 998 immediately

Symptoms: core temperature above 40°C, hot skin (either dry from failed sweating, or still profusely wet from earlier exhaustion), confusion, slurred speech, seizures, loss of consciousness, rapid pulse, rapid breathing. This is a medical emergency — brain, kidney, liver and heart damage begin within minutes.

Action: call 998. While waiting, move to shade or AC. Cool as aggressively as possible — cold water spray plus a fan, ice packs to neck, armpits, groin, or immerse in cool water if safe. Do not give fluids by mouth if consciousness is impaired. Turn onto their side if unconscious.

Prevention that actually works

Avoid outdoor exertion 11am–4pm May–September. Drink 2.5–3.5 L water daily; more if working outdoors or exercising. Wear light loose UV-blocking clothing and a hat. Take shaded and AC-cooled breaks every 20–30 minutes if working outdoors. Acclimatise gradually — new arrivals need 10–14 days. Skip alcohol on high-heat days — it dehydrates. Check on elderly relatives and neighbours daily during heatwaves. Never leave children or animals in a parked car — internal temperatures reach 60°C within minutes.

Frequently asked

How much water should I drink in Dubai summer?

For a sedentary adult indoors, 2.5–3 L daily. For anyone active outdoors or working construction, delivery, valet or landscaping, 4–6 L across the day, spaced hourly rather than gulped. Add electrolytes (rehydration sachets, coconut water, or salted snacks) if sweating heavily.

What's the difference between heat cramps and heat exhaustion?

Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms during or after exertion — usually a sign of electrolyte loss. They can precede heat exhaustion. Treat both with rest, cool environment and fluids with electrolytes. Persistent cramps or nausea means treat as heat exhaustion and monitor closely.

Can I get an IV drip at home for dehydration?

Yes. Aafiyah's home IV therapy service treats moderate dehydration, heat exhaustion, hangover and severe gastroenteritis at your home or hotel across Dubai — GP-supervised, DHA-licensed nurse delivery.
