Food Poisoning in Dubai: What to Do in the First 24 Hours

Stomach upset after a Dubai brunch or street food? The first-24-hour plan, the warning signs, and when IV fluids beat sipping water.

By Amar Adris · Published 19 March 2026 · Updated 22 May 2026

What it usually looks like

Nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps and sometimes a low-grade fever — typically 6–48 hours after eating something contaminated. Most cases settle in 24–72 hours with the right rehydration.

The first 24 hours at home

Sip oral rehydration solution (Pedialyte, Hydralyte or DIORALYTE — available across Dubai pharmacies) in small, frequent amounts. Avoid milk, alcohol, caffeine and rich food. Reintroduce plain rice, toast, bananas and yoghurt as tolerated. Anti-diarrhoeal medication isn't recommended without a doctor's review, especially if you have a fever or blood in the stool.

When you need to be seen — or hydrated by IV

High fever, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, signs of dehydration (dizziness on standing, dark urine, no urine for 8+ hours, dry mouth), or vomiting that won't stop. In Dubai's heat, dehydration sets in fast — a doctor-led IV hydration drip at home can shorten recovery from days to hours when oral fluids aren't holding down.

What we do

Same-day assessment in clinic or at your home/hotel, anti-sickness medication if you can't keep fluids down, stool tests when bacterial or parasitic infection is suspected (common after travel), and IV fluids on site if needed.

What's causing most cases here

Norovirus is the most common viral cause; bacterial causes include Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In Dubai, hot weather and the time food sits between kitchen and table at large buffets, beach clubs and outdoor venues amplify risk. Returned travellers from South Asia or Africa also present with parasitic causes worth testing for.

When to escalate care

Inability to keep fluids down for more than 6–8 hours, signs of dehydration (dizziness on standing, dark or absent urine, sunken eyes), high fever, bloody diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms lasting beyond 72 hours all warrant medical review. Pregnant women, young children, the elderly and the immunocompromised should be reviewed earlier.

How IV rehydration helps

When oral fluids aren't tolerated, an IV drip of normal saline with anti-emetic medication restores hydration within an hour and stops the vomiting cycle. Our home IV therapy service handles this routinely — most patients feel meaningfully better before the bag is finished. Antibiotics are only used in specific bacterial cases confirmed by clinical pattern or stool culture.

Returning to normal eating

Once vomiting has stopped for 4–6 hours, start with small sips of oral rehydration solution, then bland foods (toast, rice, banana, plain yoghurt). Avoid dairy beyond plain yoghurt for 48 hours, avoid alcohol and caffeine for at least 24 hours, and reintroduce normal diet gradually over 2–3 days. If symptoms recur with food reintroduction, get reviewed.

When to suspect something beyond a 'stomach bug'

Symptoms lasting beyond 5–7 days, bloody diarrhoea, severe weight loss, persistent fever, jaundice, or symptoms in someone who's recently travelled to South Asia, Africa or Central America — all warrant stool testing for bacterial, parasitic and protozoal causes. Some travel-acquired infections (giardia, amoeba, Salmonella) need specific treatment and are missed by routine 'stomach bug' protocols.

Frequently asked

Can I get an IV drip for food poisoning at home in Dubai?

Yes. A doctor reviews you, sets up the drip (saline plus anti-sickness and B-vitamins as indicated) and a nurse stays for the duration. Most patients feel significantly better within an hour.

When should I worry about food poisoning?

Bloody diarrhoea, persistent high fever, severe abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting, signs of dehydration, or symptoms lasting beyond 3–4 days — any of these warrant being seen the same day.

Can I get an IV drip at home for food poisoning in Dubai?

Yes — our doctor-led IV therapy service comes to your home, hotel or office, usually within 60–90 minutes. The doctor assesses you first and adjusts the drip and medications accordingly.

Should I take an anti-diarrhoeal medication like loperamide?

Only in mild cases without fever or blood in the stool. Loperamide can prolong bacterial infections by trapping the pathogen — get reviewed first if you're systemically unwell.
