Flu Vaccination in Dubai: Who Needs It, When, and Why It's Worth It

Dubai flu season runs October to March. Who needs the shot, when to time it, and why the at-home flu jab is now the easy option.

Flu season in Dubai

UAE influenza activity rises October to March, mirroring the Northern Hemisphere. Most cases peak December–February. The DHA recommends annual vaccination for everyone over 6 months — and especially for over-60s, pregnant women, healthcare workers, people with chronic conditions (diabetes, asthma, heart disease, immunosuppression) and parents of small children.

Which vaccine and when

We use the WHO-recommended quadrivalent vaccine — protecting against four circulating strains. Northern Hemisphere formulation is available from late September; Southern Hemisphere formulation is available earlier for travellers heading south. Get it by mid-November to maximise protection through the Dubai peak. Immunity builds over 10–14 days and lasts the season.

The honest case for getting it

The vaccine doesn't stop every infection. It reduces severity, halves your risk of being hospitalised, and meaningfully reduces the chance you infect a more vulnerable family member. It will not give you the flu — the inactivated vaccine cannot. A sore arm and mild fatigue for 24 hours is the worst most people experience.

At home, in clinic, at work

We offer flu vaccinations in clinic in seconds, at home alongside an annual GP review, and through corporate on-site programmes for Dubai employers. Children, pregnant women and elderly relatives are usually easier at home — no waiting room, no exposure, no traffic.

Cost and insurance

Flu vaccination in Dubai typically costs AED 100–200 in clinic. Most insurance plans cover it under preventive care; we'll confirm before charging. Corporate programmes are billed per employee and substantially cheaper than the cost of a single avoided sick week.

Why getting it matters in Dubai

Dubai's flu season runs roughly October to March, driven by air-conditioned indoor crowding and international travel. We see significant flu transmission every winter — particularly through school networks and offices. Vaccination reduces your risk of infection, dramatically reduces severity if you do catch it, and reduces transmission to vulnerable family members.

Who should prioritise vaccination

Adults over 65, pregnant women at any trimester, children aged 6 months to 5 years, anyone with chronic respiratory, cardiac, renal or metabolic disease, anyone immunocompromised, healthcare workers, teachers and parents of young children. Insurance coverage in the UAE typically includes the vaccine for adults and children with no out-of-pocket cost.

Where to get it

At our Business Bay clinic without an appointment most days, or via home visit anywhere in Dubai for families, executives short on time or anyone unwell or housebound. The injection takes seconds; the soreness lasts 24–48 hours; full protection develops over 10–14 days.

Common myths we hear in clinic

'The flu shot gave me flu' — biologically impossible with the inactivated vaccine; soreness and mild low-grade temperature are immune response, not infection. 'I never get flu' — until you do, and pass it to a vulnerable family member. 'It's not that bad' — UAE hospital admissions for flu complications run into the thousands each season, particularly in older adults and those with chronic disease.

Frequently asked

Can I get the flu vaccine at home in Dubai?

Yes. A doctor or nurse brings the vaccine to your home, completes a short pre-vaccination check, administers the shot and stays for the standard 15-minute observation.

Do I need a flu jab every year?

Yes — circulating strains change annually and immunity wanes. The WHO updates the recommended composition twice a year for each hemisphere.

Can I get the flu vaccine at home in Dubai?

Yes — our nurses and doctors offer home flu vaccination across Dubai for individuals, families and small groups (popular for households and office teams).

Is the flu vaccine safe in pregnancy?

Yes — the inactivated flu vaccine is recommended at any trimester and protects both mother and baby in the first months after birth.
