Ear Pain and Ear Infections in Dubai: What's Causing It and What to Do

Pool water, dry AC and travel pressure changes — why ear pain is so common in Dubai and when it needs a doctor.

Why ear problems are common in Dubai

Year-round swimming pools, hot tubs and the beach mean a lot of water in ears. Combine that with dry air-conditioned environments and frequent flying, and ear pain ends up being one of the most common reasons people book a same-day GP visit in Dubai.

The two main types

Outer ear infection (swimmer's ear / otitis externa): pain on touching the ear, itching, sometimes discharge — usually triggered by water exposure. Middle ear infection (otitis media): pain deeper in the ear, often with fever and reduced hearing, more common in children and after colds.

When you need a doctor

A proper otoscope examination is the only way to tell which type you have and whether antibiotics or antibiotic ear drops are needed. We see ear infections same-day in clinic or at home, and refer to ENT for hearing tests or persistent cases.

How to prevent the next one

Dry ears thoroughly after swimming, avoid cotton buds, use silicone earplugs in pools, and treat colds and sinus issues early to stop them tracking into the ears.

Swimmer's ear vs middle ear infection

Otitis externa — swimmer's ear — is an outer-canal infection common in summer when residents and tourists spend hours in pools and the sea. It hurts when you pull the tragus or chew, and the ear often itches before it aches. Otitis media — middle ear infection — usually follows a cold and presents with deeper, throbbing pain, sometimes fever, and occasionally a discharge if the eardrum perforates.

When to see a doctor

Severe pain, fever, discharge, hearing loss lasting more than a few days, dizziness or vertigo, swelling behind the ear, or symptoms in a child under two. Recurrent infections in adults also need investigation — chronic otitis can damage hearing if neglected.

How we treat it

Otitis externa is usually managed with antibiotic-steroid ear drops, keeping the ear dry, and pain control. Otitis media in adults often resolves without antibiotics in 2–3 days; in children we follow age- and severity-based guidelines. Earwax impaction — a common Dubai presentation thanks to in-ear headphones and earplugs — is gently irrigated or removed under direct vision.

Earwax — the underrated Dubai problem

In-ear headphones, AirPods worn for hours daily, frequent earplugs for sleep in apartments, and dry AC air all conspire to compact earwax against the eardrum. Symptoms range from mild fullness and reduced hearing to vertigo, tinnitus and pain. We remove wax under direct otoscopic vision using gentle suction or irrigation depending on the situation — usually 10–15 minutes per ear and immediately effective.

Hearing loss after infection — when to worry

Some short-term hearing reduction is normal during and immediately after a middle ear infection. If hearing hasn't returned to baseline within 6–8 weeks, or if it gets worse, we arrange audiometry and ENT referral. Persistent middle ear fluid in children can affect speech development and warrants timely review.

Frequently asked

Can I get ear drops without seeing a doctor in Dubai?

Antibiotic ear drops are prescription only in the UAE. A doctor needs to look in the ear first to confirm the diagnosis and rule out a perforated eardrum, which changes which drops are safe.

Do you treat ear infections at home?

Yes — our GPs carry otoscopes on home visits and can examine, diagnose and prescribe on the spot anywhere in Dubai.

Do you offer ear examinations at home?

Yes — our home doctors carry otoscopes and can examine, diagnose and treat most ear infections during a home visit, including earwax removal in straightforward cases.

Can I prevent swimmer's ear?

Dry your ears thoroughly after swimming, avoid cotton buds, and use acidifying drops (or a mix of equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol) prophylactically if you swim daily.
