Dust Allergies and Sandstorms in Dubai: A Survival Guide

Why so many Dubai residents start sneezing after a sandstorm — and the medications, devices and home tweaks that actually help.

Why Dubai is hard on noses and lungs

Fine PM2.5 and PM10 from desert dust, construction and traffic combine with high pollen during shoulder seasons and indoor cold-air recirculation. Many residents who never had allergies arrive in Dubai and develop symptoms within 1–2 years. It is not in your head.

What helps — in order of evidence

Daily non-sedating antihistamine (cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine) for sneezing, itchy eyes and runny nose. A daily intranasal steroid spray (mometasone, fluticasone) used correctly for 2 weeks — the single most under-used and most effective treatment. Saline nasal rinses morning and night during dust spikes. HEPA air purifier in the bedroom — meaningful, not magical. Close windows and shift exercise indoors during sandstorm warnings.

Where money is wasted

IgG food allergy tests, unaccredited 'allergy panels', most home humidifier add-ons, expensive 'detoxing' supplements. Skip them. Spend the money on a quality HEPA purifier and a proper nasal steroid technique.

When asthma is the real diagnosis

Wheeze, chest tightness, night cough, exercise-triggered breathlessness — these aren't just 'bad allergies', they're asthma until proven otherwise. Spirometry and a structured trial of inhalers is the right path. Untreated asthma in Dubai's air is the commonest reason for ED visits in young adults.

Testing that actually helps

Skin prick testing or specific IgE blood testing for inhaled allergens (dust mite, cockroach, cat, dog, common moulds, regional pollens) — useful when symptoms persist despite treatment and you're considering immunotherapy. We run these in clinic and review results with a clear action plan.

What's actually in Dubai dust

Fine silica from construction, desert sand particles, mould spores from indoor humidity, dust mites in carpeted and air-conditioned interiors, and pollen blown in from green spaces. For sensitised individuals, this combination triggers year-round symptoms that worsen during sandstorms and shamal winds in spring and early summer.

Treatment that actually works

Daily second-generation antihistamines (loratadine, cetirizine, fexofenadine), intranasal corticosteroid sprays (the most underused effective treatment), saline nasal irrigation, and HEPA filtration at home. For severe cases, allergen-specific immunotherapy delivered as drops or injections can reset the response over 3–5 years — increasingly available in Dubai.

When to see a doctor

Symptoms unresponsive to over-the-counter treatment for more than 2 weeks, sleep disruption, recurrent sinus infections, new-onset asthma symptoms (wheeze, chest tightness, night cough), or eye symptoms severe enough to affect work or driving. A proper review identifies the specific allergens via skin-prick or specific IgE testing and tailors treatment accordingly.

Cleaning and HVAC matters more than you think

Routine AC filter changes (every 1–3 months in Dubai dust), HEPA filtration in bedrooms, washing bedding at 60°C weekly, removing carpets in main living areas where possible, and using mattress and pillow allergen-proof covers all reduce allergen load meaningfully. Combine with daily treatment, and most patients see substantial improvement within 4–6 weeks.

When to consider allergy immunotherapy

Sublingual or subcutaneous immunotherapy is worth considering when symptoms persist despite optimal daily treatment, when you've identified a specific dominant allergen, and when you're prepared for a 3–5 year course. It's the only treatment that modifies the underlying allergic response rather than suppressing symptoms — and the only treatment with sustained benefit after stopping. Availability has improved significantly in Dubai over the past few years.

Frequently asked

Should I get an air purifier in Dubai?

If you have allergies or asthma, yes — a HEPA purifier in the bedroom measurably reduces PM2.5 exposure where you spend a third of your life. It is the highest-yield single device for Dubai homes.

Can a doctor prescribe asthma inhalers in Dubai?

Yes. A GP can diagnose asthma with history, examination and spirometry, then prescribe a reliever, a preventer, and a written asthma action plan — usually in a single visit.

Do I need allergy testing in Dubai?

Helpful if symptoms are persistent or treatment isn't working — we run specific IgE blood tests and refer for skin-prick testing where indicated.
