Dubai Flu 2026: Symptoms, Home Care and When to Worry
Influenza cases are up across Dubai this season. Most people recover at home; some benefit from antivirals if started early; a few need urgent review. Here's how to know which.
Flu vs common cold vs COVID
Flu comes on fast — one afternoon you're fine, that evening you're flattened with fever, aches and exhaustion. A cold builds over 1–2 days, is milder, and centres on nose and throat. COVID has become less distinct in most vaccinated adults; loss of smell and taste is now less specific than it used to be. Only a swab distinguishes flu from COVID reliably.
Home care
Paracetamol 1g every 6 hours (max 4g/24h) for fever and aches. Ibuprofen 400mg every 8 hours as an alternative if you tolerate NSAIDs.
Fluids: 3 L water daily, more if sweating. Rehydration sachets if you're losing fluid.
Rest — genuinely. Working through flu prolongs the illness and increases the risk of secondary bacterial pneumonia.
Isolate for 5 days from symptom onset to protect household and colleagues. Flu is contagious 1 day before symptoms and 5–7 days after onset.
Who benefits from antivirals
Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) reduces symptom duration by roughly a day and reduces complication risk in vulnerable groups if started within 48 hours of symptoms. It's worth considering for anyone aged 65+, pregnant, immunocompromised, or with chronic heart, lung, kidney, liver, neurological or metabolic disease (including diabetes). A GP will assess and prescribe if indicated — swab first if the diagnosis is uncertain.
Red flags — call same-day
Breathlessness or chest pain. Coughing up blood. Confusion or unusual drowsiness. Severe or persistent vomiting. Signs of dehydration. Fever returning after initial improvement (classic pattern for secondary bacterial pneumonia). Any of these warrant urgent GP review, and in some cases hospital assessment.
Prevention
The annual flu vaccine remains the single most effective intervention. Available at Aafiyah every autumn — quadrivalent covering the current circulating strains. Recommended for everyone over 6 months, especially the vulnerable groups above and household contacts of vulnerable people.
Frequently asked
How long does flu last?
Most people feel very unwell for 3–5 days, gradually improve over the following 5–7 days, and have a lingering cough or fatigue for another 1–2 weeks. Any deterioration after day 5, or fever returning after initial improvement, warrants a GP review to rule out bacterial pneumonia.
Can I get Tamiflu without seeing a doctor?
No — oseltamivir is prescription-only in the UAE. A GP will assess whether it's indicated based on symptoms, timing and your risk group. Home doctor visits with same-day swab and prescription are available across Dubai.
Should I get the flu vaccine in Dubai?
Yes — the annual quadrivalent flu vaccine is recommended for everyone from age 6 months, and especially for over-65s, pregnant women, healthcare workers, immunocompromised people and anyone with chronic disease. Best time to vaccinate in the UAE is October–November.
