The Best Blood Tests for Women in Dubai by Decade
A decade-by-decade guide to the blood tests that genuinely matter for women in Dubai — without the marketing fluff and the 100-marker upsell.
Why women need a different panel
Most 'executive health' packages in Dubai are designed around male physiology and male risk factors. Women have different baselines, different hormonal cycles and different risk windows. Iron deficiency is dramatically more common in menstruating women. Thyroid disease is 5–8 times more common in women. Cardiovascular disease in women is under-diagnosed because symptoms differ. This guide is what we actually recommend, by decade.
All panels below are run as a single fasting blood draw at home or in our clinic. Results within 24 hours, reviewed by a British-trained GP.
In your 20s
Full blood count, ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, TSH, fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipid panel.
Why: catches iron deficiency (1 in 3 menstruating women in Dubai), subclinical thyroid disease (often missed as 'just stress'), severe vitamin D deficiency (worse in women who cover or work indoors), and establishes a metabolic baseline before lifestyle drift sets in.
Add if relevant: anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) if considering delaying pregnancy beyond 30, full STI screen if newly sexually active or new partner.
In your 30s
Everything from your 20s, plus: HbA1c (annually if any family history of diabetes), fasting insulin, full liver panel, magnesium, omega-3 index if relevant.
Add if considering pregnancy: rubella immunity, varicella immunity, hepatitis B status, syphilis screen, AMH, day-3 FSH/LH/oestradiol, thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO).
Add if symptoms of PCOS (irregular cycles, acne, hair changes, weight gain): testosterone, free androgen index, SHBG, fasting insulin, prolactin.
In your 40s
Everything from your 30s, plus: ApoB, Lp(a) (once only), hsCRP, HbA1c annually, full hormone panel including FSH, LH, oestradiol, progesterone, testosterone, SHBG and DHEA-S.
Why hormones now: perimenopause typically starts in the early 40s and is missed for years. Symptoms (fatigue, anxiety, sleep disruption, weight gain, brain fog, joint pain) are often misattributed to stress, depression or 'getting older'. A correctly timed hormone panel plus symptom assessment makes the diagnosis clear.
Cervical screening (HPV/Pap) every 3–5 years per UAE guidelines, mammogram from 40 onwards (annually or biennially depending on risk).
In your 50s and beyond
Everything from your 40s, plus: FSH and oestradiol to confirm menopausal status if periods stopped, bone profile (calcium, phosphate, ALP, vitamin D, PTH), DEXA scan baseline for osteoporosis risk, full thyroid panel including free T3 and TSH.
Cardiovascular focus intensifies: ApoB, HbA1c, hsCRP and blood pressure annually. Cardiovascular disease becomes the leading cause of death in women post-menopause and is consistently under-treated.
Mammogram annually or biennially. Colorectal cancer screening from 45–50 (FIT test or colonoscopy). Bone density (DEXA) at menopause and then every 2–5 years.
Hormone testing: timing matters
For cycling women, hormone bloods should be drawn on day 2–4 of the cycle (counting day 1 as the first day of bleeding) for FSH, LH, oestradiol and AMH. Progesterone is most useful 7 days before the expected period (day 21 in a 28-day cycle).
For perimenopausal women with irregular cycles, hormone bloods are less useful — diagnosis is mostly clinical, based on symptoms. A normal FSH does not rule out perimenopause.
Iron deficiency: the most under-treated condition in Dubai women
Iron deficiency without anaemia (low ferritin, normal haemoglobin) causes fatigue, hair loss, brain fog, breathlessness, restless legs and low mood. Standard CBC misses it — you need ferritin specifically. Target ferritin for symptomatic women is above 50 ng/mL, not just above the lab cutoff of 10–15.
Treatment is oral iron (best taken every other day with vitamin C) or, if not tolerated, IV iron infusion in clinic — typically AED 1,200–1,800 per session and life-changing for women with severe deficiency.
What to skip
Comprehensive food intolerance IgG panels — no clinical evidence. Heavy metal screening unless occupational exposure. Routine tumour markers (CA125, CEA) in asymptomatic women — high false positive rate. Daily-cycle hormone tracking with home saliva kits — not validated for clinical decisions.
Putting it together
The point of a blood panel is not to chase numbers; it is to find the small number of issues that matter and act on them. A 60-minute review consultation, results in hand, with a GP who knows your story is worth more than 50 extra markers ordered by a machine.
Frequently asked
Can I do the blood tests at home in Dubai?
Yes. A trained phlebotomist comes to your home, takes the sample, transports it to a DHA-licensed lab and results are sent to your GP within 24 hours. AED 200 home visit fee plus the panel cost.
Will my Dubai insurance cover hormone tests?
Insurance usually covers hormone tests if there is a clinical indication (symptoms, fertility planning, menopause investigation). Pure screening panels are often self-pay.
