Annual Health Check in Dubai: What's Worth Doing, What Isn't

The tests that genuinely move the needle — by age, sex and risk — and the ones that just inflate a Dubai health-check invoice.

Written and medically reviewed by Dr. Shahbaz Afzal, MBBS, MRCGP — GMC-registered British-trained GP · Published 22 May 2026 · Updated 1 June 2026

Why most Dubai 'packages' aren't medicine

Buying a bundle of 80 tests off a menu is not screening — it's shopping. A good health check is shaped by your age, sex, family history, lifestyle and existing conditions, then signed off by a GP who interprets the results in context. Done well, it changes outcomes. Done badly, it generates anxiety and false-positive cascades.

The core annual baseline (every adult)

Blood pressure, weight, BMI and waist circumference. Full blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, lipid profile, HbA1c, TSH, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, ferritin, hs-CRP and urinalysis. Cardiovascular risk score. A 20-minute history-and-examination consultation — because the conversation finds more than the lab does.

By age

30s: as above plus mental health and lifestyle review, contraception or pre-conception counselling, dental and eye check. 40s: add ECG, cardiovascular risk stratification, family screening for cancers, and consider a one-off coronary calcium score for higher-risk men. 50s+: add bowel cancer screening (FIT or colonoscopy), bone density consideration, prostate (men) or breast and cervical (women) screening at the recommended intervals.

By sex

Women: cervical screening every 3–5 years from 25, breast screening (clinical exam from 30; mammogram from 40 if high-risk or 50 routinely), full female hormone panel if symptomatic, contraception and pre-conception care. Men: testosterone if symptomatic, prostate discussion from 50 (earlier for family history), abdominal aortic ultrasound at 65 for smokers.

By risk

South Asian heritage: tighter diabetes and cardiovascular thresholds, earlier screening. Family history of heart disease before 55: lipoprotein(a), apolipoprotein B and earlier imaging. Smoker: lung CT consideration from 55. Heavy drinker: liver enzymes and ultrasound. Sedentary executive in Dubai: VO2 max and cardiorespiratory testing if symptomatic.

What to skip

Whole-body MRI as a first-line screen for healthy people — high false-positive rate, no mortality benefit. Tumour markers for general screening — they're for monitoring known disease. Hair mineral analysis, IgG food allergy panels, 'oxidative stress' tests — no clinical evidence. We'll tell you no when the answer should be no.

What you walk away with

A written report, plain-English explanation of every finding, a prioritised action plan (lifestyle, repeat tests, referrals), and a named GP who follows up. Not just a stapled PDF.

What changes after the test day

The test day is the easy part. What actually changes outcomes is the consultation where you sit down with the doctor, go through every marker in plain English, and leave with a written plan — a target HbA1c, a follow-up scan, a referral for a colonoscopy at 50, a B12 to repeat in 8 weeks. Without that conversation a health check is paperwork.

What we screen for by age

From 30: cardiovascular risk markers, diabetes screening, mental health screening, cervical screening for women. From 40: add ECG, more detailed lipid sub-fractions where indicated, mammography for women on national guidelines, prostate considerations for men. From 50: add colorectal cancer screening (FIT or colonoscopy), bone density screening for women, eye exam annually. From 60: add cognitive screening, falls risk review.

Frequently asked

How much does an annual health check cost in Dubai?

A clinically appropriate annual check ranges roughly AED 1,500–4,500 depending on age, sex and any additional imaging. Executive-level packages with cardiac stress testing and imaging can reach AED 6,000–12,000.

Is an annual health check covered by insurance?

Many UAE insurance plans now include a preventive health check. We are not insurance-based yet, so you pay at the appointment and claim reimbursement with our coded invoice — and we won't add tests just because they're 'covered'.

Do I need an annual check if I feel well?

Yes — most of what we screen for has no symptoms until late stages. The point of the check is to catch trends before they become diseases.
