AC Allergy or a Cold? How to Tell in Dubai

Sneezing, blocked nose, itchy eyes, tickly throat — starts every time you sit under a Dubai AC. Is it a cold, or is it your air-con? Here's how a doctor tells them apart.

Written and medically reviewed by Dr. Shahbaz Afzal, MBBS, MRCGP — GMC-registered British-trained GP · Published 14 June 2026 · Updated 15 July 2026

The two conditions look almost identical — but the pattern is different

AC allergy (usually dust mite, mould from unmaintained units, or the temperature-shock rhinitis) tends to be itchy, watery, sneezy, symmetrical, and fast on / fast off — starts within minutes of AC exposure, eases within an hour of leaving it. There's no fever, no body ache, no thick yellow-green mucus. It repeats reliably every time you're in the same room.

A cold is a systemic viral illness. It builds over 24–48 hours, usually starts with a sore throat, becomes progressively more congested (thick, coloured mucus), often has mild fever and body aches on days 1–3, and doesn't care whether the AC is on or off. It lasts 5–10 days and gradually resolves.

AC allergy: what actually works

Service your AC. Filter change every 3 months, deep clean every 12. A neglected AC is a mould reservoir.

Second-generation antihistamine daily during high-symptom periods — cetirizine, loratadine or fexofenadine. Non-sedating, safe for months.

Saline nasal rinse morning and evening. Physically removes allergens.

Intranasal steroid spray (fluticasone, mometasone) for persistent symptoms — needs 5–7 days to reach full effect.

Cover the mattress and pillows with anti-mite encasings if dust mite testing is positive.

When to see a doctor

Book a GP if symptoms persist over 4 weeks, disturb sleep, cause facial pain or thick coloured discharge (possible sinusitis), come with wheeze or breathlessness (possible asthma component), or don't settle on optimal antihistamine plus intranasal steroid. Skin-prick or specific IgE blood testing identifies the exact trigger and opens the door to sublingual immunotherapy — the only treatment that modifies the underlying response.

Frequently asked

Can Dubai AC give you a real allergy?

Yes. Poorly maintained AC units are a common source of Aspergillus mould and accumulated dust mite allergen. Both trigger allergic rhinitis, sinusitis and asthma exacerbations. Regular filter changes and annual deep cleans significantly reduce symptoms.

How do I know if it's sinusitis?

Sinusitis usually presents with facial pain or pressure (especially bending forward), thick coloured nasal discharge, reduced sense of smell and, sometimes, fever. It typically follows a cold that hasn't cleared after 10 days, or an allergy flare that got secondarily infected.

Is allergy testing available in Dubai?

Yes. Skin-prick testing and specific IgE blood panels (dust mite, mould, grass, tree pollen, animal dander) are widely available in DHA-licensed clinics. Aafiyah offers both — results guide targeted avoidance, medication and immunotherapy decisions.
