You Have an Abnormal Blood Test Result — What Happens Next

One out-of-range number rarely means what the internet says it means. Here is the sequence a doctor should follow.

Written and medically reviewed by Dr. Shahbaz Afzal, MBBS, MRCGP — GMC-registered British-trained GP · Published 13 August 2026 · Updated 13 August 2026

Step 1 — confirm it is real

Labs have variation, and so do you. Dehydration, a recent workout, a fatty meal or a new supplement all move markers. Many abnormalities disappear on a correctly prepared repeat test.

Step 2 — read it in context

The same raised liver enzyme means one thing after a course of antibiotics and another in someone with metabolic risk factors. Context is the medication list, the symptoms, the family history and the last three results.

Step 3 — investigate or observe, deliberately

Not every abnormality earns a scan. A good doctor states clearly which path they are choosing and why, and what would change that decision.

Step 4 — a plan with a date

'Come back if it gets worse' is not a plan. 'Repeat in six weeks, fasting, and I will call you' is. Aafiyah books the repeat before the call ends.

Frequently asked

Does one abnormal blood result mean I am ill?

Usually not. Single out-of-range values are common in healthy people, which is why the first step is a properly prepared repeat rather than treatment.

How soon should an abnormal result be repeated?

It depends on the marker — days for electrolytes, weeks for liver enzymes, months for cholesterol. Your doctor should give you a specific interval, not a vague one.

Can I get a repeat blood test at home in Dubai?

Yes. A DHA-licensed nurse can take the repeat sample at home from AED 350, with the same GP reviewing both sets side by side.
