How often should a urinary catheter be changed?
Long-term catheters are typically changed every 4–12 weeks depending on the type and how quickly sediment builds, and sooner if there is bypassing or blockage. We set the interval with your GP and hold the date for you.
Can a nurse insert a new catheter at home?
Yes, where it is clinically appropriate. Male catheterisation after prostate surgery or where there has been a difficult insertion may need a doctor or specialist review first — we will tell you before the visit, not on the doorstep.
What if my catheter is blocked?
Treat it as urgent. We aim to be with you within 60–90 minutes to flush or replace it. If urine still does not drain, the GP arranges onward urology care immediately.
Do you supply the catheter and bags?
Standard consumables are included in the visit fee. Specialist catheters and long-term bag supplies are quoted separately and can be delivered to you.
How do I know if I have a catheter infection?
Cloudy or foul-smelling urine, fever, loin or lower-abdominal pain, or new confusion in an older person. The nurse can take a sample at home and the GP reviews the culture and prescribes if needed.
Is catheter care done discreetly?
