From what age should I start PSA testing?
Baseline at 45 for average risk, 40 if you have a father or brother with prostate cancer or are of African/Caribbean heritage. Discuss with your GP — PSA is a shared-decision test.
Does the DRE hurt?
It is uncomfortable, not painful. It takes under 30 seconds and provides information PSA alone cannot. It is always optional and always with your consent.
What raises PSA apart from cancer?
Age, benign prostate enlargement, recent ejaculation, cycling, prostatitis, urinary infection and DRE itself. Context is everything — a good GP interprets, not just reports.
Do I need to fast?
No fasting is needed for PSA. Avoid ejaculation for 48 hours, no vigorous cycling for 48 hours, and no DRE in the week before the blood draw.
Can I be seen at home?
The blood draw yes. The DRE is done in our Business Bay clinic — private, chaperoned, under 10 minutes.
What if my PSA is high?
Your GP explains the number in context and, where indicated, arranges an mpMRI referral before any biopsy — the modern pathway, not a straight-to-biopsy approach.
