Kidney Disease in Sheikh Zayed Road: catch it before it catches you.
You can lose 60% of your kidney function before you feel a single symptom. For Sheikh Zayed Road residents, that means the biology of chronic kidney disease can be tracked in your blood 5–15 years before any Dubai GP would formally diagnose you. Our programme isn't one blood test — it's a panel you repeat, so we see the pattern, not the snapshot.
Kidney Disease develops silently over 5–15 years in Sheikh Zayed Road residents just like anywhere else. A targeted blood panel — repeated every 3–6 months, personally reviewed by a British-trained GP — flags the earliest measurable changes and turns them into a specific action plan for you. Home draw across Sheikh Zayed Road or clinic in Business Bay.
Why kidney disease is a 5–15 years problem — not a one-day one.
The kidneys have enormous reserve — you can lose the majority of nephron function before creatinine even moves outside 'normal'. That's why standard blood tests routinely miss early kidney disease. In Dubai, the top drivers are diabetes, hypertension and NSAID overuse (particularly for chronic musculoskeletal pain), and all three damage the kidney silently for years.
The two tests that catch this early are eGFR trend over time and the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR). A single ACR above 3 mg/mmol usually predates a measurable drop in eGFR by 2–5 years — and both together predict progression to dialysis. Yet most Dubai patients have never had an ACR done.
What's happening in your body, year by year
eGFR often paradoxically above 120. Common in early diabetes and hypertension.
ACR 3–30 mg/mmol. Detectable years before eGFR falls. Almost always missed.
Falls from 100 toward 70. Still 'normal' on a lab report. Blood pressure often rising in parallel.
eGFR 45–59. Anaemia possible. Vitamin D activation impaired.
Symptoms appear: fatigue, nocturia, ankle swelling. Reversal difficult; slowing progression the goal.
Markers that shift first — long before symptoms
Every kidney disease early-detection panel we run for Sheikh Zayed Road patients includes these markers. The standard 'annual check-up' bloods most people get in Dubai typically miss half of them.
eGFR (creatinine + cystatin C)
Cystatin C is the more sensitive marker — creatinine lags. We use both.
Urinary albumin:creatinine ratio (ACR)
The single earliest sign of kidney damage. Predates eGFR fall by years.
HbA1c
Diabetes is the #1 driver of CKD in Dubai. Tight control halves progression.
Uric acid
Independently predicts new-onset CKD and hypertension.
Serum bicarbonate
Falls silently in stage 3 CKD. Correcting it slows progression.
PTH and vitamin D
Rise years before creatinine as the kidney loses ability to activate vitamin D.
Ferritin, transferrin saturation
Iron deficiency and CKD-anaemia often develop before diagnosis.
Sheikh Zayed Road patients tell us these are 'nothing' — they're not.
- •Waking twice or more per night to urinate
- •Frothy urine (a sign of protein leaking)
- •Ankle swelling by end of day that improves overnight
- •Fatigue disproportionate to sleep and activity
- •Muscle cramps at night — subtle electrolyte drift
- •Itchy skin without a rash

Kidney disease is defined by trajectory, not one snapshot. eGFR needs to be tracked over 3+ measurements before we can tell whether it's stable, drifting or falling. Regular testing is not optional — it is the diagnosis.
- 01Full renal panel with cystatin C, ACR and PTH — not just creatinine
- 02Blood pressure target below 130/80, ideally with an ACE-inhibitor or ARB
- 03Review and stop chronic NSAID use where possible
- 04SGLT2 inhibitor consideration if diabetic or high-risk — proven to slow CKD
- 05Repeat panel every 3–6 months; escalate to nephrology if eGFR trend accelerates
