Blood Tests by Symptom — Dubai

Pick the symptom that brought you here. Each guide lists the first-line blood tests a British-trained GP would order, why they matter, and how to book a nurse home visit anywhere in Dubai.

Blood tests for fatigue

The first-line blood tests for fatigue are a full blood count, ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, thyroid function (TSH, Free T4) and HbA1c. Together they screen for anaemia, iron deficiency, thyroid disease, diabetes and vitamin deficiency — the four commonest medical causes of tiredness in Dubai adults.

Blood tests for tiredness

For persistent tiredness, ask for a full blood count, ferritin, vitamin D, B12, folate, TSH and HbA1c. Together these cover anaemia, iron and vitamin deficiency, thyroid disease and diabetes — the medical causes of tiredness reversed by simple treatment. A British GP reviews and explains every result within 24 hours.

Blood tests for hair loss

Hair loss is most commonly linked to low ferritin (iron stores below 30 µg/L), vitamin D deficiency, thyroid disease or hormone imbalance. The core screen is ferritin, vitamin D, B12, thyroid (TSH, Free T4) and a full blood count. For women, add female hormone panel; for men, testosterone. Doctor-reviewed results in 24 hours.

Blood tests for unexplained weight gain

Unexplained weight gain warrants a thyroid panel (TSH, Free T4), fasting glucose or HbA1c, insulin, lipid profile and cortisol. In women, add female hormone panel and prolactin. These tests screen for hypothyroidism, insulin resistance, PCOS and Cushing's — the four commonest treatable metabolic causes of weight gain.

Blood tests for unexplained weight loss

Unintentional weight loss of more than 5% body weight needs urgent screening: full blood count, HbA1c, thyroid function, liver and kidney function, CRP, coeliac screen and tumour markers where indicated. See a GP the same week — this symptom always needs a face-to-face review.

Blood tests for low libido

For low libido, the first-line panel is testosterone (total and free), SHBG, LH, FSH, prolactin, TSH, vitamin D and HbA1c. In women, add oestradiol and progesterone. Testing before 10am gives the most accurate testosterone reading. Reviewed by a British GP.

Blood tests for erectile dysfunction

ED is often the first sign of vascular or metabolic disease. Ask for testosterone, HbA1c, fasting glucose, lipid profile, TSH, prolactin and PSA (if 40+). British-GP review the same day.

Blood tests for joint pain

For persistent joint pain, first-line bloods are CRP and ESR (inflammation), rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP, ANA, uric acid (gout), vitamin D and a full blood count. These distinguish inflammatory arthritis from gout, viral arthralgia or vitamin D deficiency.

Blood tests for muscle cramps

Muscle cramps are usually caused by electrolyte imbalance or vitamin deficiency. Ask for magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium, vitamin D, B12, TSH and kidney function. Common in Dubai's summer heat and in patients on statins or diuretics.

Blood tests for palpitations

For palpitations, first-line bloods are a thyroid panel (TSH, Free T4), full blood count, electrolytes (magnesium, calcium, potassium), HbA1c and ferritin. An ECG is done at the same visit. Doctor-reviewed within 24 hours; urgent same-day slot if symptoms are new.

Blood tests for chest pain (non-emergency)

New or unexplained chest pain needs a same-day GP review — call 998 for sudden crushing pain. Follow-up bloods for non-cardiac chest pain include troponin (if within 12 hours), lipid profile, HbA1c, D-dimer where indicated, thyroid panel and CRP.

Blood tests for breathlessness

Bloods for breathlessness screen for anaemia, thyroid disease, heart failure and infection. Ask for a full blood count, ferritin, TSH, NT-proBNP, D-dimer (if indicated), CRP and kidney function. Reviewed the same day by a British GP with an in-clinic oxygen check.

Blood tests for dizziness

Dizziness bloods screen for anaemia, low blood sugar, electrolyte imbalance, thyroid disease and dehydration. Ask for full blood count, ferritin, HbA1c, fasting glucose, electrolytes, vitamin B12 and TSH.

Blood tests for brain fog

Brain fog is commonly caused by vitamin D deficiency, low B12, thyroid disease, iron deficiency, insulin resistance or perimenopause. First-line bloods: vitamin D, B12, folate, ferritin, thyroid panel, HbA1c and — in women 40+ — a female hormone panel.

Blood tests for insomnia

For persistent insomnia, ask for TSH and Free T4, cortisol (AM), vitamin D, magnesium, ferritin, HbA1c and — in perimenopausal women — a female hormone panel. Overactive thyroid, low iron, low magnesium and hormonal shifts are all treatable drivers.

Blood tests for anxiety

Overactive thyroid, low vitamin D, low B12 and low magnesium can all mimic or worsen anxiety. Ask for TSH and Free T4, vitamin D, B12, magnesium, ferritin and HbA1c. Doctor-reviewed by a British GP within 24 hours.

Blood tests for low mood

Low mood bloods screen for reversible physical causes: vitamin D, B12, folate, thyroid function, ferritin, HbA1c and — in men — testosterone. Correcting deficiency does not replace psychological support but often lifts baseline energy quickly.

Blood tests for headaches

For chronic headaches, ask for full blood count, ferritin, vitamin D, B12, thyroid function, kidney function, ESR (if over 50) and blood pressure. Most tension and migraine headaches don't need bloods, but iron and vitamin D deficiency are common triggers in Dubai adults.

Blood tests for a missed period

First check pregnancy (beta-hCG). If negative, ask for TSH, prolactin, LH, FSH, oestradiol, testosterone, SHBG and HbA1c to screen for thyroid disease, hyperprolactinaemia, PCOS or premature ovarian insufficiency.

Blood tests for irregular periods

For irregular cycles, ask for a female hormone panel (LH, FSH, oestradiol, progesterone, prolactin, AMH), thyroid panel (TSH, Free T4), testosterone, SHBG and HbA1c. Timing to day 2–5 of the cycle gives the best information for PCOS and perimenopause.

Blood tests for heavy periods

For heavy periods, ask for a full blood count, ferritin, TSH, coagulation screen and female hormone panel. Iron deficiency is present in over half of women with menorrhagia — even before anaemia shows on FBC.

Blood tests for adult acne

For adult / hormonal acne, ask for testosterone, SHBG, DHEAS, LH, FSH, prolactin, HbA1c and (if starting isotretinoin) fasting lipids and liver function. A British GP interprets the pattern against your cycle before prescribing.

Blood tests for night sweats

Night sweats bloods screen for hyperthyroidism, infection, perimenopause and (rarely) lymphoma. Ask for TSH, Free T4, full blood count, ESR, CRP, HbA1c and — in women — a female hormone panel.

Blood tests for hot flushes

For hot flushes in women 40+, the panel is FSH, LH, oestradiol, TSH, Free T4, vitamin D and lipid profile. A GP uses cycle history plus results to confirm perimenopause and discuss HRT.

Blood tests for chronic bloating

For chronic bloating, ask for full blood count, ferritin, CRP, coeliac screen (tTG-IgA), thyroid function, H. pylori stool antigen and — if abnormal bowels — a stool culture and calprotectin. Rules out coeliac, inflammatory bowel disease and thyroid causes before an IBS label.

Blood tests for chronic diarrhoea

For diarrhoea lasting > 4 weeks, ask for a full blood count, CRP, ferritin, thyroid function, coeliac screen, HbA1c, liver and kidney function plus stool culture and calprotectin.

Blood tests for chronic constipation

For chronic constipation, ask for TSH, calcium, magnesium, HbA1c, kidney function and — if red flags — a full blood count and CRP. Hypothyroidism and hypercalcaemia are the medical causes worth ruling out before laxatives.

Blood tests for persistent nausea

For persistent nausea, ask for beta-hCG (women of reproductive age), liver function, kidney function, HbA1c, calcium, TSH and H. pylori stool antigen.

Blood tests for frequent urination

Passing urine more often — especially with thirst — should trigger an HbA1c and fasting glucose (diabetes screen), plus urine dipstick, urine culture and kidney function. In men over 50 add PSA.

Blood tests for excessive thirst

New excessive thirst is diabetes until proven otherwise. Ask for fasting glucose, HbA1c, kidney function, calcium and sodium.

Blood tests for numbness and tingling

For peripheral numbness or tingling, ask for vitamin B12, folate, HbA1c, TSH, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium and a full blood count. B12 deficiency, diabetes and thyroid disease are the leading treatable causes.

Blood tests for cold hands and feet

Persistently cold hands and feet suggest anaemia, hypothyroidism or peripheral vascular problems. Ask for full blood count, ferritin, TSH, HbA1c, lipid profile and — where indicated — an autoimmune (ANA) screen.

Blood tests for swollen ankles

Ankle swelling bloods screen for heart, kidney and liver disease. Ask for kidney function, liver function, albumin, TSH, full blood count and NT-proBNP. A GP examines legs for DVT the same day.

Blood tests for chronic back pain

Chronic back pain rarely needs bloods, but for inflammatory pain (morning stiffness > 30 min, night pain, age < 45), ask for CRP, ESR, HLA-B27, vitamin D, calcium and full blood count.

Blood tests for recurrent infections

For frequent chest, urine, sinus or skin infections, ask for a full blood count with differential, immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM), HIV screen, vitamin D, HbA1c and CRP.

Blood tests for itchy skin

For unexplained generalised itch, ask for liver function, kidney function, full blood count, ferritin, TSH, HbA1c and allergy IgE. Rules out cholestasis, iron deficiency, thyroid disease and atopy.

Blood tests for easy bruising

For easy bruising, ask for a full blood count with platelets, coagulation screen (PT, APTT), liver function, vitamin C and vitamin D. Low platelets, liver disease and vitamin deficiency are the common findings.

Blood tests for snoring / sleep apnoea

For loud snoring or witnessed apnoeas, bloods screen for the metabolic burden of untreated sleep apnoea: HbA1c, lipid profile, TSH, testosterone and full blood count. A home sleep study is arranged where indicated.

Blood tests for low energy

For low energy, the standard screen is full blood count, ferritin, vitamin D, B12, TSH, HbA1c, testosterone (men) or female hormone panel (women 40+), and cortisol.
